What is a priority in your life?
We all have the same 24 hours to a day so are you maximizing your day?

Here’s why you may have to answer no to that question!  You may be failing to manage your priorities.  You notice I didn’t say time management!

Knowing your priorities will help you to manage them well. Managing your priorities will essentially help you to get more done.  There are a number of ways of managing your priorities.

One way is to manage based on the complexity of the task.

  • Some people choose to tackle the most difficult task first and then work on the easier one.

  • Some choose to knock out the easier ones and then break more difficult ones into smaller pieces.

Another way to manage priorities is by having a carry-over system.

  • I sometimes like to do a brain dump in the evening after I’m done working so that I will know what I have left over from the day to complete the next day.  Those items move to the top of my priority list.

  • Sometimes I start my morning by examining my list of things to do and adding a priority system to it.

As you can see there is no hard and fast, right or wrong way to manage; the important thing is to make sure that you have a way to get things done and account for all activities.

Managing your priorities can also depend on when you function optimally.  If you are a morning person, you may find it easier to schedule meetings and important tasks in the morning hours so that you can be fully present and engaged. If you enjoy your afternoon naps (like I do), you may want a job that allows you to get off early enough to take those afternoon naps or even utilize your lunch break for nap breaks, when feasible.

Now for those of us who really value having a flexible schedule to travel often and work from remote locations, priority management is a must. A flexible schedule means that you are able to work at your own pace at hours you have set for yourself… this requires discipline and focus.  Most entrepreneurs find priority management their best friend because it gives you the freedom to really maximize your time by being able to block off time to work on projects, meet with clients and bring in revenue.

If you value working fewer hours in the day to have more time to enjoy life and have fun.  Then you definitely want to work smart and play hard. You have to prioritize those fewer hours by making sure the work you are doing is bringing in income.

Priority management is not just for those that have outside jobs. Whether you are a stay-at-home parent, a bustling business owner, or a diligent student, prioritizing your day is important for your peace of mind and productivity.
