CONSERVATION NEWS

One of the last remaining private properties in the White Lake Basin now protected

Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the Nature Trust of British Columbia has purchased one of the last remaining private properties in the White Lake Basin for conservation. The conservation area spans 161 acres (65 hectares) and will be integrated into the already conserved 20,317 acres (8,222 hectares) of the White Lake Basin Biodiversity Ranch. Since 1996, The Nature Trust of BC has permanently acquired 13 parcels of private land in the White Lake Basin Biodiversity Ranch, demonstrating its commitment to building large conservation complexes over time. The White Lake Basin Biodiversity Ranch is one of the leading biodiversity ranches in BC and has been ranked the highest in conservation value in all of The Nature Trust of BC’s conservation holdings. Friends of Cortes Island has launched a new blog series that aims to uplift their local conservation community and at the same time inspire others. Small Acts of Conservation will highlight the big impact many small acts can have. Find the first post, “Frog Ponds!” here.

Parkland expansion in Nanaimo

Thanks to the perseverance of the Nanaimo & Area Land Trust (NALT) and multiple local hiking and outdoor groups, the lands connecting Mount Benson Regional Park to the green corridor surrounding Westwood Lake have been purchased by the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo. The addition of these three parcels of land will create a connected parkland of 500 hectares. An informal trail system has been built up over years through these lands, creating recreation opportunities for hikers, runners and mountain bikers. The area was in danger of being altered due to road building and timber harvest. Read the full press release here.

What is a Local Conservation Fund?

Local Conservation Funds are tax-based services established by local governments to generate funds dedicated to environmental land conservation in a particular community. If adopted, a Local Conservation Fund to support environmental conservation and sustainability becomes a government service, just like garbage collection, park maintenance, and road work. Typically, conservation projects are proposed by local organizations, reviewed by technical experts, and their funding allocations are decided upon by local government officials.
