As Nonprofit Austin expands our work in diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, I am reminded of an old story: |
There were two birds in the woods. It was a very, very cold day. In the distance they saw a hunter, tears in his eyes from the cold, taking aim at them. One bird urged the other to flee with him. "He's going to shoot us," he warned. The other, seeing the tears in the hunter's eyes, urged his friend not to flee. Don't worry," he counseled, "he's a compassionate man. He won't shoot us; see the tears in his eyes. To which the first bird replied, "don't look at his eyes, but what he does with his hands."
After the current of supportive statements – tears in our eyes - we have yet to see fundamental change – what we do with our hands - within our local community or nationally.
Nonprofit Austin exists to heighten nonprofit practitioners’ consciousness and commitment to social justice and exemplary behavior that will further move our nonprofit community toward being a more welcoming and more inclusive environment where race, ethnicity, gender, and other human differences are viewed as professional and organizational strengths.
