What does it mean to be a community gardener? In the first installment of our video series, Richmond Growing, we meet the Ng family, the Shah family, and Fahal whose stories will show us why these green spaces matter. Join us in celebrating local community gardens and the folks who make these green spaces so great! In July, we were able to expand two of our community gardens at Cook and Terra Nova with the help of our team and some lovely volunteers. A big thank you to everyone who came to help! At Cook, we built 39 plots plus 2 raised accessible plots, and at Terra Nova, we built 21 plots for a total of 62 new plots. With these new plots comes new gardeners; if you see a new neighbour, please say hi and help give them a warm welcome to the community.

The Hamilton Community Association and Urban Bounty is hosting a weekly pop-up produce market on Saturdays, from July 9 until November 19. The market will be held at the Hamilton Community Centre (5140 Smith Drive) and will be open weekly from 10:00am-1:00pm. The Hamilton community has limited access to fresh foods, and the market will enable Hamilton residents to access low-cost, fresh fruits and vegetables from local suppliers and distributors. Updates can be found on the Hamilton Community Centre Facebook page.

Seed Saving Demonstration Garden

This year we have built two small plots at Paulik Park to create an educational garden space focused on seed saving, and protecting seed diversity. The garden will complement the seed saving workshops provided by Urban Bounty. The overall goal of the garden is to increase awareness surrounding the ecological impact of reduced seed diversity, or how saving seeds can help ensure a more resilient climatic future. Currently, we are saving arugula, spinach, lettuce, Steveston Blue Beans, and kale seeds. Look for updates soon as we host a seed saving workshop!

Can you guess what this is? It's arugula going to seed!
