Dangerous conditions north coasts weekend 23-24 July
South to southeasterly winds will persist for the next few days as a high near Tasmania slowly moves east. An East Coast Low developing off Fraser Island will generate large easterly swells and increasing east to southeasterly winds to NSW northern waters Friday, Saturday and Sunday before it moves away to the east.

BOM has issued warnings for the weekend for Byron, Coffs, Macquarie and Hunter coasts.

On Byron coast: On Saturday, seas of 4 m plus SW swells of 5 m. On Sunday, seas of 2.5 m plus SE swells of 4 m.
On Coffs coast: On Saturday, seas of 3 m plus E swells of 5 m. On Sunday, seas of 2 m plus SE swells of 4 m.
On Macquarie coast: On Saturday, seas of 2 m plus E swell of 4 m. On Sunday, seas of 2 m plus SE swells of 4 m.
On Hunter coast: On Saturday, seas of 1.5 m plus E swells of 3 m. On Sunday, seas of 1 m, plus E swells of 3 m.

BOM is warning that on those coasts conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Boaters on ALL coasts: keep an eye out in estuaries and rivers - heavy rainfall continues to cause dirty water and numerous hidden hazards.

Check local forecasts to get the latest before you go out on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
  • never turn your back on the sea.
