Community organisations issue joint call and recommendations for a new Energy Poverty Strategy
On July 21st 2022, 19 organisations * who work directly with communities impacted by energy poverty, social exclusion and inequality wrote to the Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications calling for a new Energy Poverty Strategy.

*Signatories of the joint letter include: Age Action, Clondalkin Traveller Development Association, Community Law & Mediation, Community Work Ireland, FLAC, Fridays for Future, Friends of the Earth Ireland, Independent Living Movement Ireland, the INOU, The Irish Heart Foundation, the Irish Rural Link, the Irish Traveller Movement, the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice, National Traveller MABS, the Northside Partnership, Not Here Not Anywhere, Pavee Point, The Society of St Vincent de Paul, TASC, Threshold.

James Cawley, Policy Officer with the Independent Living Movement Ireland, said: “The government’s cost of disability report showed that disabled people spend 10% more on energy costs, are more likely to be in arrears on utility bills, and are more likely to be unable to afford to keep their home adequately warm. It is essential that efforts taken to address energy poverty are inclusive of disabled people, acknowledge the additional cost of having an impairment and improve the quality of life of Disabled people. Increasing the inclusion of Disabled people and Disabled Persons Organisations in the design and delivery of a new Energy Poverty Strategy would benefit the effectiveness of energy poverty action for everyone.”

ILMI was delighted to facilitate a July sunny Zoom chat 'check-in' with our Atlantic Technological University (ATU) autumn 2022 Scholarship winners - Claire Kenny from Longford and John Doherty from  Donegal. Claire & John will kick-off their academic journey this September towards completing the one-year Post-Graduate Disability Equality Studies Certificate with St. Angela's College Sligo Centre for Disability Equality Studies.

ILMI were also delighted that we had a lot of interest from disabled people from across the Country for the new ILMI & ATU Scholarship. Claire and John will be using their learning to lead-out on capacity-building other disabled people who are members of ILMI and add to the current skills in their establishing of local Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPOs) in north west and midlands. Both of our active Scholarship winners will discover that Disability Equality Studies at St. Angela's College is a provocative, enthralling and most importantly, a hugely educational experience for students hoping to learn about disability equality. Course lecturer & ILMI'S ONSIDE Coordinator Peter Kearns and ILMI's VOICE Community Development Worker Paula Soraghan & Course 2nd year student had a zoom check-in to support the ILMI member new students as they are guaranteed to question their previously formed beliefs around the subject of disability.

Strategies For Change (SFC) update

IMAGE: Zoom screenshot of the participants

In this week’s SFC session (in the sweltering heat) we have Aisling Glynn come and talk to us about the Equal Status Acts in relation to disabled people. The Equal Status Acts prohibit discrimination in the provision of goods and services , reasonable accommodation  and education . It was a lively discussion and Aisling was extremely impressed with the feedback from the questions she posed to the group. Check out our Strategies for Change web page in the coming weeks for the recording of this session.

ILMI and the new Atlantic Technological University (ATU) have chosen two ILMI members to receive the autumn 2022 Post-Grad Disability Equality Studies Certificate, we had a lot of interest in the one-year of study funding and a selection committee made the choice on how candidates would use their learning to lead-out on capacity-building other disabled adults. With the success of the ILMI Scholarship process, ATU asked our ONSIDE Coordinator & ATU lecturer Peter Kearns to speak with graduates at a North West further education Sligo fare about considering a Certificate or Diploma or Masters in Disability Equality Studies supported by ILMI. There are still some places left on the ATU on-line 2022 to 2023 Disability Equality Studies Post-Grad one-year Certificate, which can also be taken as a two-year H. Dip. Or a three-year Master's of Science. The Cert to Masters is mainly delivered by disabled academics steeped in the social model and is mostly delivered on-line over two evenings per Semester. St. Angela's College, now part of the new Atlantic Technological University (ATU), has a bursary that is aimed at supporting disabled graduates to progress through the three-year Disability Equality Studies Course. If interested in finding-out more info on the Cert-2-Masters programme, email ILMI's 'Peter' at peterkearns@ilmi.ie or ATU Disability Equality Studies Coordinator 'Susan' at scarton@stangelas.ie

Leitrim Development Company (LDC) are very involved with supporting ILMI's capacity building of Leitrim DPO and are very interested in including a social model led voices in their national roll-out of Social Farming programmes. Social Farming is about giving disabled adults the chance to get-out of their day centres for a few weeks to work with local farmers and gain confidence in mainstream work situations. ILMI's ONSIDE Coordinator Peter Kearns delivered a 'Talk' and workshop at Mullingar's Bloomfield House Hotel with twenty farmers exploring how Disability Equality social model 'Thinking' can inform their relationships with disabled adults coming from mostly medical model day-centre venues. LDC are keen to have ILMI involved in a future accredited Disability Equality informed Social-Farming Training programme with farmers across the country and LDC international partners.

ILMI VOICE Project Cork update

IMAGE: Zoom screenshot of the presenter Eve

On Wednesday, the 20th July, the Cork VOICE online platform hosted a lively meeting where the guest Speaker was Eve Curran, Security Engagement Manager with Ulster Bank who gave a very informative presentation on How to avoid fraud when banking-on-line, shopping-on-line or dating-online dating scams.

We were delighted to have new participants to Cork VOICE, so it looks like looks like VOICE is starting to benefit from word of mouth. We discussed new bus routes being proposed for Cork city and agreed that some of us would attend the public meetings and share the information with the group.

Climate Conversation 2022 Department of Environment, Climate and Communications

“The Climate Conversation 2022 is now open. People across the country are invited to have their say on how we can all play our part in securing our sustainable future.

Reaching our ambitious climate goals will require changes to many aspects of our lives including our homes and workplaces, how we power and heat them, how we travel, how we grow our food, how much waste we create and how we manage that waste. Everyone, including Government, communities and individuals, will need to work together to make Ireland carbon-neutral for a sustainable future.

Becoming a climate resilient society will help us to cope with the impacts of a changing climate and we are committed to achieving this future through a just transition, meaning all voices will be heard in a fair and equal manner, and new opportunities will mean no one is left behind.”
