Join us on Thursday, July 28th for the Buffalo Maritime Center’s third (and final!) speaker event of the summer featuring Mike Vogel, a Buffalo historian and President of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association. Before Canalside, this storied piece of waterfront was the historically important Western Terminus of the Erie Canal. But there were other names for it -- "the infected district," and "the very nostrils of hell." This was the place where sailors from the west were paid off at the end of their voyages, and canawlers from the east were paid off at the end of theirs. And besides squaring off in brawls, they sought other pursuits that made The District one of the toughest and most vice-ridden ports in the world. In time, The District also would become Buffalo's "Little Italy" and then slip into decay. Mike Vogel, who authored a definitive history of The District with fellow historians Ed Patton and Paul Redding, takes a look back at the people who made this place world-famous. The BMC Speaker Series will take place on Thursdays at the Honda Tent at Canalside (on the Replica Canal across from Explore & More). This event has a $10 entrance fee per person or $5 for BMC Members. Doors will open at 5PM and there will be a cash bar before and after the event. Be sure to get there early to get a great seat!
