Sunday, July 31 at 10 am:  "I Brought My Spirit to the Sea” by Rev. Rob Hardies
Some of us have come to the sea for the summer—for rest, play and renewal. Others of us have been here a lifetime. Whether we’re daytrippers, weekenders, wash-ashores or lifers, what are the spiritual lessons the sea can teach us?

Upcoming Services
Sunday, August 7 at 10 am:  “Bring Many Names,” by Rev. Rob Hardies
Alice Walker said, “People come to church not to find God, but to share God.” This is the premise and the promise of Unitarian Universalism: That each of us brings to this community a name or two for the Sacred that reflects our own religious experience. And that sometimes the name one of us brings, is precisely the name that another of us is longing to hear...and our souls are enlarged. Alleluia! Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the theological diversity at the heart of our faith.
Greg Colossale and the UUMSV Singers will lead music this Sunday.

Sunday, August 14 at 10 am:  “Illuminated” by Rev. Rob Hardies
On the occasion of my final sermon as your minister, and on the Sunday before Grand Illumination, I will reflect on what it means to see the world as “illuminated.” This is the greatest gift our UU faith has given me: to experience the world as luminous, as shot through with the Holy. This Sunday I want to share that gift with all of you.
In addition to our own Jeremy Berlin, we are grateful to be joined this Sunday by two special musical guests from DC, Rochelle Rice and Jennifer Hayman.

A Neighborly Invite
Our UU neighbors, Lexi and Corbi Reese have graciously extended an invitation to host our congregation and the West Chop summer parishioners to an after service fellowship and open house at their home this Sunday, July 31.  The Fantzye Bagel Food truck will be providing the refreshments. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet our new neighbors and others who will be joining the gathering.

A Farwell to Rev. Rob Hardies
Join us to say thank you and farewell to Rev. Rob Hardies after his last preaching for a Sunday service August 14.
We will serve a light lunch after the 10 am service!

Do you know what his flag represents?

Share the Plate - What? You want my lobster roll?!
As we all take steps to return to ‘normal’ pre-COVID days, UUSMV is once again planning to “Share the Plate” 1 to 4 times each year. Don’t worry, we’re not expecting you to share your lobster roll and coleslaw. Rather, “Share the Plate” is a way for UUSMV to share our offertory plate with a non-profit nominated by you. Ideally, this would be an organization that supports/promotes UU values and principles.
Our next Share the Plate (STP) offertory will be Sunday October 16, 2022. Anyone can
nominate an STP recipient organization(s) until September 15th by either filling out a paper nomination form that’s available at the chapel or online. From the nominations submitted, the STP committee will select one organization to receive the donations from the Oct. 16th offertory. Several weeks prior to October 16, we’ll announce who the receiving organization will be and explain how donations can be made to Share the Plate.
Some past recipients of STP include:  Houses of Grace, MA Coalition to End Gun Violence, Coast Guard Spouses Association.  On behalf of the STP committee, we thank you for your time & ideas for Share the Plate.

T-Shirt Project
Dear friends,
The time has come to live our values out loud-once again!

We are organizing a t-shirt making and installation that will center reproductive rights for all women and is in response and protest to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. We will have everything needed to write your message in support of reproductive rights on a t-shirt that will be hung on a clothesline in the church’s front yard.  We ask you to bring a t-shirt, old or new, different sizes and colors preferred! You can turn an old t-shirt inside out also!
We will have waterproof markers for cloth.  We need the old-fashioned wire coat hangers and clothesline-if you have and can donate, please let Rita know. We also need a few poles to put in the ground to support the clothesline and shirts.
The coat hanger serves as a symbol of the reproductive rights movement and a reminder of the gruesome pre-Roe era. Unfortunately, it will now serve as a reminder of the post-Roe era. It symbolizes a desperate last resort for women who have been denied legal abortion services.
Anyone is welcome to drop in and write your message on your t-shirt with your friends. We will invite the community, so feel free to bring a friend or too.

The messages need to be large enough to be read from the street. No profanity or graphic language, please.
Drop
in on Saturday July 30 from 10 am-2 pm. You may also make one at home and someone will pick it up from you or you can drop it off at the church. (Universal justice volunteers will make final decisions on appropriate messages and will do all of the hanging.)

A Long Talk - Party with a Purpose
At A Long Talk we are known for having uncomfortable conversations about racism and asking questions that help all of us gain a deeper understanding of its impact. Admittedly our mission and purpose carry a lot of weight and while we work 24/7/365 to eradicate racism and dismantle white supremacy in America, we also love to turn up, chill out, and party down when we get the chance!
We have worked diligently over the past year with Martha’s Vineyard organizations and businesses to further our anti-racism education that leads into our Pillars of Change network.  Our flagship, Community of Change partnership with Martha’s Vineyard has been rewarding and successful, with over 200 people of the island participating in our activation.  The Black Party is a culminating celebration of those partnerships and work. All are welcome, free and open to all ages:  Saturday, August 6, 12 pm - 4 pm at Waban Park.

July is Disability Pride Month which is celebrating its 23rd year since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act! It is a month to celebrate how disability is a natural part of human diversity in which people with disabilities can take pride. It emphasizes the worth and dignity of everyone.
Following the passage of the ADA, Boston held a Disability Pride Day and Disability Pride month was born. The flag was designed by Ann Magill and each element symbolizes a different part of the community. Black represents those with disabilities who lost their lives not only because of their disability but due to negligence, eugenics, and suicide.  Red represents physical disabilities, yellow - cognitive and intellectual disabilities, white - undiagnosed and hidden disabilities, blue - blue mental illness, and green - sensory perception disabilities.
This month offers us an opportunity to remember to listen to and lift up the voices of people with disabilities.

UUSMV Allies for Racial Equity
Our Vision calls us “to accountably dismantle white supremacy, racism, and all intersecting oppressions in ourselves, our community, our institutions, and our democracy.” The UUSMV Allies for Racial Equity team is documenting both individual and group efforts of the congregation to meet our vision. We are inviting you to share the individual actions you are taking to dismantle white supremacy, racism, and all intersection oppressions. I will be asking about specific efforts from time to time, but feel free to share your actions with me at anytime. We will not share names, just numbers!
This week’s inquiry is:
Do you belong to or support any organizations that fight white supremacy, racism,or other intersecting oppressions?
For example: NAACP, Human Rights Campaign, ACLU, Black Lives Matter, UU the Vote, Southern Poverty Law Center, Equal Justice Initiative, GLSEN, League of Women Voters, MV Diversity Coalition, Trevor Project, National Women’s Law Center.
Send your response to Dorie Dorie.godfrey@gmail.com.
