August at Curry Public Library

Author and Founder of The Hearth Mark Yaconelli to Visit Curry Public Library

In conjunction with the release of Mark Yaconelli’s latest book, Between the Listening and the Telling: How Stories Can Save Us, join the author for an inspiring, in-person, interactive presentation at Curry Public Library in Gold Beach on Wednesday, August 10^th at 5:30pm. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will show how stories can heal our families, our world, and ourselves.

Mark Yaconelli is a writer, retreat leader, community builder, spiritual director, storycatcher, husband, and father. He is the founder and executive director of The Hearth. Mark speaks to a variety of audiences each year across North America and the United Kingdom including The Greenbelt Arts Festival, The Ford Family Foundation, Compassion International, The National Youth Workers Convention, Princeton Theological Seminary, The Center for Congregations, The Global Gathering for Spirituality and Justice, and many other events and organizations.

Interviews and profiles of Mark Yaconelli’s work have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, BBC News, ABC World News Tonight, and The Washington Post Online.

Mark is the author of six books including Between the Listening and the Telling: How Stories Can Save Us (Broadleaf, 2022), The Gift of Hard Things (IVP 2016), Wonder, Fear, and Longing (Zondervan 2009). Mark lives in Southern Oregon with his wife Jill. They have three adult children.

Last Week of Summer Reading

Thank you to all of you who have been participating in our Summer Reading Program. We have been absolutely amazed at the attendance and positive feedback with our programs this year! As we come to a close, we wanted to send out some important reminders.

The last day of our Summer Reading Program is Saturday, August 6. In order to mark your participation as completed, we need your printed tracker turned in to the library by 5pm on August 6th. If you're working online only, we will timestamp your participation through our online Summer Reading software. Winners of Grand Prizes will be announced and notified by August 9.

We have just a few days left for our Summer Reading programs. Please mark the following dates in your calendar:

(This last STREAM time will feature music exploration. Feel free to bring in an instrument if you'd like to demonstrate how to play.)

Saturday, August 6 at 5pm: Summer Reading Trackers Due!

Our "End of Summer Reading" celebratory event will be a Glow Party! Join us on Saturday, August 6; drop-in from 10am-2pm. Our meeting hall will be set up for families to explore the fun of glowing colors and activities. We will serve a pizza lunch and have areas set up for all ages to enjoy and create with us. This will be the last day to collect reading book prizes and to complete your reading hours/days/books and to collect bonus points for participating in activities listed in your tracker.

Meet Our Library Staff

Over the next several months we'll be using our newsletter to introduce you to some of our newer library staff members. This month, meet Brooke Gray!

Brooke recently relocated to Gold Beach from Puyallup, Washington, to be closer to her family. At the library you will find Brooke doing a little bit of everything. This summer, Brooke helped out with our ASCEND after school program for middle school students. Brooke is also a certified GED proctor, staffs our Saturday movie nights, and will very soon be assisting patrons at the library service desk. Previously, Brooke worked at PetSmart providing excellent customer service to people and their pets. Brooke's hobbies include reading, drawing, painting (both traditional and digital), writing, gaming, and kayaking.

Circulation Report

The library staff has been crunching numbers as we closed our books for the 2021-22 fiscal year. We are pleased (see our afterschool coordinator Perry Kishaba's reaction in the picture above) to share that this year we checked out more books and other library materials than almost any year in our history. In the 2018-19 year, the last full year prior to covid-19, library users checked out 77,553 items. This year our users checked out 80,470 items. Among those users were 85 middle school students that participated in an optional reading program as a part of our ASCEND afterschool program. We hope to keep you well-supplied with books during the next year. Keep reading!

Outdoor Movies in August

Outdoor movies got off to great start in July! Here is the movie schedule for August:

For those of you who haven't had a chance to join us for a movie yet, here is how it works: All movies are free. You can watch from the comfort of your car or bring lawn chairs. We have an FM radio transmitter, so you can tune into sound from your car speakers or borrow one of our hand-held radios for the evening. After some trial and error last summer, we determined that it needs to be pretty dark to see the movie screen. Show times vary slightly based on date and weather conditions, so all start times are estimates. We welcome you to arrive a little early to pick your spot, grab some concessions in the lobby (available by donation), and enjoy the evening scene. To suggest a specific title for future showings, email rebecca@cplib.net. (Based on our movie licensing agreement, we cannot show everything, but we would love to hear your suggestions and make it happen if we can).

Book Discussion and Free Lunch for Adults

Join library staff member Rebecca Marcus on Thursday, August 25th at noon for a fun and informal discussion of what you've been reading recently. Come away with great ideas from other community members! The library holds one of these events every year, and it is always a great discussion. This year we are offering a free lunch to go along with the discussion in the hopes of luring in a few more participants. If you like, bring a list of books you've read recently to help jog your memory. This program is free and open to all adults in the community. Digital Sketching, 3D Printing, Sewing and More! August Programs in the Tech Lab

As always, our tech lab crew has lots of offer! Here is what's on the calendar for the month of August:

Intro to Digital Sketching
Saturday, August 6th: 10am-12pm
Join us for an introduction to digital sketching using Sketchbook, a free digital sketching software. Register here.

Intro to 3D Printing Slicers
Saturday, August 13: 10am-12pm
You’ve found that perfect 3D model online and now you want to 3D print it. Learn how to convert your 3D model file into a multilayered file that instructs the 3D printer on what and where to print. Register here.

S ewing Machine Demonstration
Saturday, August 20: Drop-in 11am-4pm
Drop in between the hours of 11am and 4pm to learn how to get a project started with the library’s Singer sewing machines.

Intro to Photoshop: Session 5– Layer Masking Explained
Saturday, August 27th: 10am-12pm
This session will dive deeper into using Layer Masks in Photoshop. Layer Masks are a powerful way to control exactly how data on an image layer is displayed. Masks can be used to partially or completely hide portions of a layer, to reveal portions of an underlying layer, to seamlessly merge two or more layers of a composite image, and much more.
