A monthly roundup of networking
opportunities in the UK's media scene.

🖐 Issue #44 | August 2022

Hi there!
I hope you've been enduring the heatwave ok? I managed to skip London's hottest day ever this month, as I was in Paris (where temperatures were not much lower btw...) celebrating my birthday 🌞🎂
Work is slowing down, as always at this time of the year and, flights cancellations permitting, I can't wait for my vacation to start and spend some time at the sea.

I hope you'll find this week's roundup useful, though shorter,  as it looks like everybody's out and about enjoying the sun!

Happy Sunday x

This month we hear from...
Kid Circus

Kid Circus is a DJ turned fashion and portrait photographer based in London, whose work features characterful portraits and softly saturated colours.

Since starting to shoot predominantly using analogue equipment, Kid has used this method to hone his eye, tighten his image capturing prices and develop his signature style. This has enabled him to work with a diverse range of clients, such as Tag Heuer, NSPCC and Rollacoaster Magazine.

His Instagram also acts as a platform to promote job opportunities and facilitate creative collaborations.

What do you like the most about your job?
That I get to meet a work with a whole range of people I might not have met in any other circumstances, and to get to work often with really talented individuals

A photographer who inspired you to get started?
To be honest, I had no such inspiration when I started, as I started with an iPhone simply taking pictures of family and life and eventually sharing them on Instagram. I started off on other genres of photography (architecture, landscapes, street photography) before settling on what I do now. So, the first photographers (sorry, I have two!) who inspired me to move into portraits were Jesse Herzog and Kat Irlin. I will admit to developing a rather unhealthy obsession with them both at one point (y'know, the ol' looking through their instagram accounts EVERY DAY kinda obsession).

How do you choose your subjects?
I really like to embrace the diversity of people I choose to work with, and my choices can often be down to something as simple as someone having a shaven head, freckles, how they wear certain outfits, or simply how I perceive their character to be and how I feel I can capture it, regardless of the need to be conventionally good looking.

What would you hope people say when they look at your images?
I’d like people to say that they can see emotion and (hopefully) the artistry in my work.

You wouldn’t go to a photoshoot without..?
A camera? Sorry, that was flippant! I’d say it would be my light meter for when I shoot on film. It’s an indispensable way for me to measure light so I get the right settings on my film cameras (no one likes to get dark pictures back from the film lab, haha).
