As anyone who has passed the gallery this week will have seen, the Chalk window is now brimming with the restful and evocative paintings of our new Featured Artist, Janice Thurston. 

Janice’s deep love of nature and, in particular, the rolling hills of the South Downs is apparent in her distinctive, undulating paintings.  Her beautiful paintings draw you into those parts of Sussex that are truly hidden gems, and she hopes the viewer will find their own connection.

Walking in Sussex armed with her camera provides the inspiration for Janice's work. Revisiting favourite vistas and the discovery of new ones ignites the excitement of endeavouring to capture the fleeting and transitory moments in the landscape.  The ever-changing seasons, weather, and times of the day, all affect the light and colours and continue to hold a fascination for Janice.  She explains: “I love the way the light illuminates the shapes and folds of the downs and strive to capture that moment before it changes”.  

Janice was born and raised in Sussex where she still lives with her family.  She loves the area which is sandwiched between the sea on one side and the rolling South Downs on the other.

Janice will be in the gallery on Friday this week and will be delighted to welcome any visitors and to talk more about her work. The gallery is open from 11-4 Thursdays - Sundays, but this Friday there's a further opportunity to meet several of the Chalk artists at our Summer Light evening (more information below). If you can't make it on Friday, Janice will also be in the gallery on Thursday 4th August and Sunday 14th August so do pop in to meet her if you can.

An evening of light and laughter


A reminder that we're holding a special summer event this Friday evening, to which all are invited. Come and browse the art in the gallery, meet the artists, and enjoy time with friends and art lovers, all while sipping cool prosecco on what promises to be a warm summer evening.
