CFI JELF Internal Information Session
As part of Lakehead University's internal CFI JELF call for applications, faculty members who intend to apply to the internal competition are strongly encouraged to attend a special information Zoom session on the JELF program.  The session will be held on July 26, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.  An overview of Lakehead's internal JELF call will be presented by Andrew Hacquoil, Research Facilitator (Institutional Programs), Office of Research Services.  The session will also include application tips/best practices.

Welcome Jocelyn!
Lakehead University's Office of Research Services and Office of Human Rights and Equity are pleased to welcome Dr. Jocelyn Bel as Lakehead's new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Research Facilitator.  Jocelyn has been at Lakehead for the past 11 years having completed her PhD in Medical Biotechnology in June 2022, her MSc in Biology in 2018, her MBA in 2016, and HBSc in Applied Bio-Molecular Science in 2015, all from Lakehead University. She has published her research in both Physiological Reports and Water, Air and Soil Pollution.
During her time at Lakehead, Jocelyn has been involved in many aspects of the university including the Senate Research Committee, Biosafety Committee, Student Union, Graduate Student Association, and Superior Science, to name a few. All of these experiences have provided her with unique opportunities to learn and execute different EDI approaches.
Jocelyn is passionate about research and enhancing Lakehead’s EDI strategies in her new role.  As the EDI Research Facilitator, Jocelyn is available to assist researchers with their grant proposals, specifically with helping them develop EDI plans in accordance with the new funding guidelines. Jocelyn will also be developing new EDI training programs, supporting the recruitment of Canada Research Chairs, as well as promoting and supporting EDI practices in the research enterprise.  In addition, Jocelyn will be a great asset in implementing EDI research initiatives set out in the Lakehead University EDI Action Plan and CRC EDI Action Plan.  You can reach Jocelyn by email at

Internal Call for Applications - NOHFC Research Internships – People & Talent Program - August 10, 2022 Internal Deadline
Under this program, Lakehead University has a quota of five research-related placements.  Of these five, two are currently, or will be available.  The internal deadline for the submission of internship applications to the Office of Research Services is August 10, 2022.  For more information, please click here.


Call for Applications: CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund (Unaffiliated) - Internal Deadline: August 15, 2022
All tenure-track and tenured Lakehead University faculty members are invited to submit applications to Lakehead University's Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) internal Fall 2022 competition. The deadline for the internal competition will be August 15, 2022.  Please note that up to $500,000 (40% CFI portion only) from Lakehead's JELF allocation has been allocated to this competition to support a total investment of up to $1,250,000 in research infrastructure.  For more information about Lakehead's internal JELF competition, including application requirements and eligibility, please click here.

Tri-Agencies: Call for interest to join the Dimensions review committee
The purpose of the Dimensions: equity, diversity and inclusion Canada pilot programlaunched in 2019 by the three granting agencies, is to increase equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) at postsecondary institutions, as well as to help drive a deeper cultural change within the research ecosystem itself. At this time, the program is accepting the first applications from postsecondary institutions "that were part of the cohort to be recognized for their efforts advancing the state of EDI in their research communities."   Expressions of interest for reviewer roles related to the assessment of these institutional applications to receive a Dimensions recognition are now being accepted, including from:
  • Scholars who have lived experience as a member of one or more of the five equity-deserving groups of Dimensions;
  • Scholars who have expertise in academic studies related to understanding inequity and exclusion in society, and in the higher education context in particular.
  • Administrators and professionals with lived experience as a member of one or more of the five equity-deserving groups of Dimensions;
  • Administrators and professionals who have experience or expertise related to efforts to address EDI in the postsecondary research sector.
The deadline to submit an expression of interest is Friday, August 19, 2022
 

CIHR:   LAUNCH: Fall 2022 Reviewer in Training Program
CIHR's RiT program offers Early Career Researchers (ECRs) the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the peer review process through direct participation in the Project Grant competition through the support of a Mentor. RiT participants are assigned up to three applications to:  1) conduct practice reviews, 2) attend the peer review meeting, 3) present one of their reviews, and 4) participate in the committee meeting.  The RiT application program period opened on July 18th, 2022 and closes on August 12th, 2022.  If you have any questions, please contact college@cihr-irsc.gc.ca.  For more information, please click here.


News from NSERC:  Pre-announcement for Alliance Missions: Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas Research
From NSERC's email notice:  We are pleased to announce that Alliance Missions is returning with a new and exciting challenge to help address climate change, focused on Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions. This call will support the goals of the 2022 Federal Budget that prioritizes Canada’s ongoing efforts to fight climate change and protect the environment by taking bold and immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while strengthening the Canadian economy with sustainable jobs and clean industrial growth.  The call will target interdisciplinary, collaborative research projects supporting net-zero GHG emissions targets. Projects must involve at least one partner organization that can be recognized for cost sharing.

Approximate timeline:
• August 2022: Call for proposals launch
• September 2022: Letters of Intent deadline
• November 2022: Application submission deadline
• March 2023: Project start date

Student Research Opportunities
Canadian Cancer Society:  Travel Awards: Black in Cancer Conference 2022
Travel Awards to PhD, MD, or MD/PhD students, and post-doctoral/medical/clinical fellows are being provided by the Canadian Cancer Society. The purpose of this program is to help cover the travel costs associated with making a scientific presentation as a first author or presenter at the Black in Cancer Conference 2022.  Deadline:  August 8, 2022.  For more information, please click here.


IDRC International Doctoral Research Awards
The purpose of IDRC International Doctoral Research Awards are intended build capacity and develop research skills in Canada and the Global South for the improvement of the lives of people in the developing world. These awards are open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing doctoral studies at a Canadian university. The costs of field research conducted for a doctoral dissertation in one or more countries in the Global South will be covered by theses awards.  Application deadline:  August 31, 2022.  For more information, please click here.

Mitacs has opened new dates for their facilitated sessions between July and August 2022 and would like to invite students and post-doctoral fellows to register.
