Volunteering

Are you hoping to gain work experience? Wanting to give back to your community and meet new people at the same time? Vinnies  are urgently needing volunteer workers to help in our Belconnen and Kippax Centre. A range of different shifts are available every day of the week – including our busy Saturday and Sunday’s – times can also be flexible. You will be trained by our team to work in different roles – from helping to process goods for sale through to working with customers, and later assisting at our busy register. Be prepared to learn a lot while having a direct impact helping people in your local community. For further information, please contact Belconnen Centre manager Isla Smith on (02) 6234 7490 or email Belconnen.cg@vinnies.org.au
Heather Freckelton on (02) 6234 7475 or email heather.freckelton@vinnies.org.au

The Defence Civilian Undergraduate Sponsorship (DCUS) is open to aspiring university students who wish to pursue a degree through the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra campus at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).

Applications for the 2023 DCUS intake are now open. Apply Now.

There are no military service obligations or requirements. This is a sponsorship for civilian students who may be interested in a civilian career in the Department of Defence.

The Department of Defence will determine the undergraduate degree disciplines that will be offered from the following options:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Aeronautical and Naval Architecture) (4 years)
  • Bachelor of Computing and Cyber Security (3 years).

Eligible applicants will have the full tuition costs of their degree covered and receive a generous annual allowance to cover the cost of text books and equipment.

During the sponsorship students will have the opportunity to participate in paid work placements within Defence, providing exciting opportunities and give an insight into how one of Australia’s largest organisations conducts business.

An information session at SFX will be organised in the coming weeks.

Did you know that 30% of Gen Zs want to take a gap year in both Australia and overseas?

Gap years have become exponentially popular among school leavers; the freedom, the life-changing experiences and opportunity to meet new friends before starting their next chapter. And while it makes sense to want to head overseas, an Aussie gap year has just as much to offer...

That's why we're excited to share a rare opportunity to find adventure, learn new skills and land a unique job with minimal experience - all without having to leave Australia.

A gap year in the Northern Territory’s Red Centre is the perfect opportunity for young people wanting to explore their own Aussie backyard.

There's heaps of entry-level jobs on offer, from short stints to long stays - with a dedicated website to help school leavers explore their options.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships
What is it?
Achieve Apprentice is a FREE online workshop for aspiring apprentices and young tradespeople.
Why Achieve Apprentice?
Every year thousands of young people apply for apprenticeships across Australia. With high demand comes tough competition and unfortunately many talented young people miss out. What’s involved?
Participants will develop key skills to help score an apprenticeship, discover pro tips and life hacks to advance their careers and connect with business experts and industry leaders. There will be a live panel featuring trades people at all stages of their career and, best of all, participants will receive a certificate of completion to boost their CV!

Early offers made through UAC

Because UAC has several offer rounds in the first half of the year, many Year 12 students ask us if they can receive an offer now.
The short answer is ‘no’: the first UAC offers to Year 12 students will be made to Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) applicants on 11 November 2022. Offers made then are not based on HSC results and ATARs. Instead, they are based on other criteria like Year 11 results and the school’s rating of the student.
Before November, offers are made to applicants who are not in Year 12 this year and already have a qualification UAC can assess. They’re often applying to start a course in Semester 2.
Most UAC offers to Year 12 students are made in late December, after the release of ATARs.
If you’re after an early offer, make sure to apply directly to the university of your choice through their early entry program. You can find a full list of early entry programs, including closing and offer dates, in our Early Entry Guide.

All courses available soon
All 2023 courses from UAC’s participating institutions will be available on UAC’s website in early August.
For students who have already applied, this is the time for them to log in to their application and review and update their preferences.
For students who haven’t yet applied the early bird period ends on Friday 30 September, at which time the processing fee increases. Even if they’re not sure what course they want to study, they should apply now and put in any course as a placeholder until they are ready to decide.

UAC PIN reminder
An email will be sent to Year 12 students who haven’t applied in early August to remind them of their UAC PIN. PINs will be emailed to the address they have registered with BSSS, so they need to ensure that this is a current email address.
To start their UAC application students will need their Year 12 student number (issued through their school) and their UAC PIN. Once they have applied, they can then use their UAC application number and UAC PIN to log in and manage their application.
If students don’t have their UAC PIN email, or are having problems with their PIN, they can read the PIN FAQs or contact UAC.
If you are planning on studying at UNSW Sydney, check out the undergraduate accommodation information here.  Applications to live at New College in 2023 are now open.  Scholarship and bursary information can be obtained from the VET and Careers office.  First Round Applications close 25 September 2022.
