⭐ SOUTH ALIVE NEWS ⭐
The cold hasn’t stopped everyone from getting out and coming together at a number of our events and projects over the last month!
Our school holiday events saw lots of tamariki get out and enjoy lego building, library storytime, yoga and some outdoor games.
We also had a weekend of learning, sharing and connecting as we had a pruning workshop, craft swap and meet the funders event all here at The Pod in one day! Big thanks to all of the people who volunteered their time to make these events happen, and thanks to those of you who came and enjoyed these events too. It was so great to see people connecting around shared interests or hobbies, and to see the passionate people in our communities making things happen!
This month also saw our housing team relaunch as the ‘Sustainable Living’ action team. As the challenges and priorities change in our community so too do our volunteer action teams. There has been a real interest from our volunteers in sustainability initiatives, so the decision was made to redirect the focus of our Housing team. If you also have a passion for South Invercargill and for sustainability then the group would love to have some more volunteers join the team.
PLASTIC BREAD TAGS ARE COMING TO A END !
Have you noticed that cardboard bread tags are very quickly replacing plastic bread tags here in Aotearoa?
This is great news for the environment, but that does mean that soon Bread Tags for Wheelchairs won't have any plastic bread tags to recycle.
We ask that all plastic only bread tags are dropped off to South Alive or The Pantry Invercargill by Monday 1 August 2022 so we can ensure we make the recyclers cut off date.
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou for all of your support! We are all volunteers, and together, we have all made such huge differences in peoples lives, as well as keeping bread tags out of landfill.
Finally, we sent out our very first mail out newsletter to all households in the 9812 postcode area. In case you missed it, you can pick a copy up from the office. We would love some feedback as this will be the first of our mail out newsletters which we hope to send out twice a year, so any ideas or suggestions can be sent through to the South Alive office - info@southalive.org.nz

⭐ THE PANTRY NEWS ⭐
We are really getting into plastic free July this month. Have you heard about Plastic Free July? It's all about reducing personal plastic use to make a big collective impact. Small changes matter and if we each choose something to change it WILL make a difference. Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for tips and giveaways as we highlight some of our favourite plastic free and reusable products that we stock in store. We are giving away an awesome refillable starter pack which is on display down at The Pantry and the lucky winner will be announced on 1st of August – all you need to do to enter is like our Facebook page, like the post and tag a friend – Good luck!
On the 7th of July we celebrated world chocolate day, because who doesn’t like chocolate. It was great fun getting our customers to try and roll double sixes for a free choccy bar and we had more winners than we thought!
Our fermentation workshop with The Ferment Kitchen’s Geraldine Pene was a sell out and we will be looking to put another on soon so if you missed out this time get in quick when tickets go on sale.

Vinegar - Garden
- AZALEAS -Water plants with a mixture of two tablespoons of vinegar per litre of water as Azaleas grow well in acidic soil.
- KILL GRASS - Pour full strength vinegar on unwanted grass.
- CUT FLOWERS - To prolong the life of cut flowers in a vase, add two tablespoons of vinegar and three tablespoons of sugar per litre of warm water. Stems should be in 3-4 inches of water.
- KILL WEEDS - Spray full strength undiluted vinegar over weeds. Re-apply often at the first sign of weed re-growth .
- INCREASE SOIL ACIDITY - In hard water areas, add a cup of vinegar to each four litres of tap water for watering acid loving plants like gardenias, rhododendrons or azaleas. The vinegar will release iron in the soil for the plants to use.
- NEUTRALISE GARDEN LIME - Rinse your hands liberally with vinegar after working with garden lime to avoid rough and flaking skin.
- RE-POTTING PLANTS - To clean pots before re-potting plants, rinse with vinegar to remove excess lime.
- GARDEN TOOLS - To clean rust off gardening tools, soak them in undiluted vinegar overnight.
- ANT DETERRENT - Spray vinegar around ant trails.
