CareDash and BetterHelp--Disturbing Practice

The Office of General Counsel (NASW National) has recently shared reports of CareDash using provider's profiles without consent to attract clients to their platform as well as funneling them to other therapists through BetterHelp.

CareDash uses publicly listed information of non-affiliated providers to attract prospective clients, but lists these providers as unreachable and will refer them to their network of providers and BetterHelp providers instead.  This article contains instructions on how to find your profile and templates for reporting them.

Oregon to Regulate Synthetic Cannabis Products, Setting National Precedent
This article from Filter Magazine describes the the state's move to stop the sale of synthetically created delta-8 THC, and the responses from various perspectives on this move.

This New York Times Article is also helpful to understanding more about delta-8 (delta-8-THC) in comparison to delta-9, it's impact on the body, it's unregulated status, and concern with contaminants.

In addition to this article, you may want to view the SAMHSA Preliminary Findings from Drug-Related Emergency Department Visits, 2021 from the Drug abuse Warning Network (DAWN) that explore data on the increase of emergency visits in patients 18 to 25 related to marijuana.
Researchers: Improving Eyesight May Help Prevent Dementia
This New York Times article describes how addressing vision impairment may be able to reduce the risk factor for dementia in some patients. While the findings are not large, it points to a simpler support to be able to engage in preventative care regarding those at risk of dementia.

WSSCSW 2021-2022 Annual Report from the Treasurer

Hello fellow Members,

The 2021-2022 Fiscal year is finally closed and the new budget for July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023 has been approved by the Board.

As many of you know we have an investment account that was gifted to the organization many years ago. Over the last two budget cycles we have not had to take any money out of that account to support the organization's expenses which is great news. The down side of the investment account is that over the last year we have experienced a loss of $8,179.10. We have seen the economy take a negative turn and this is the result of that. The board also voted to move the investment account to a different investment firm to streamline accessing the funds when and if needed. The account is now held through Trivent. The manager of the account is confident that the market will turn back and we will continue to see it grow. Let's hope so!

We finished out the year with a net over budgeted income of $5126.09, you will not see this exact number on the report as it is less the $3,000.00 that was budgeted to take out of the investment account (which we did not do) and the loss that the investment account $8179.10 is added back into the income figure as it is not a true loss of income.  We came under budget on expenses by $12,639.41. Our net income YE $14,767.83. Net income on report $6588.73 plus 8179.10 the reported negative income from the loss on investment = $14,767.83.

As you are all aware, for most of the year we did not have a lobbyist which reduced our expenses substantially. Additionally,  a few Board members did a stellar job in obtaining sponsorships which also contributed to the reduced expenses. The board voted to reallocate some of the funds that would have paid for a Lobbyist to instead pay for the Evaluator.

I have included a YE balance sheet for your records.

As we move into the new fiscal year please review the Board approved 2022-2023 Budget.

If any member has questions please feel free to contact me.

Message from the Interim Legislative Chair

Hello everyone,

I hope you're doing well and staying cool. As the Interim Legislative Chair, I am moved to send a reminder for everyone to vote in the upcoming Primary, August 2nd.

Doing clinical work is governed by the policies that we create and systems in place in which we work. Voting and some of the more macro level issues are a beautiful opportunity to bring our micro level experience, those really lived experiences to program development, systems change, and legislative advocacy. Our SW values ground us in Social and Racial justice; advocacy is being empathetic to the point of action.

Attached is a pdf of a WA State Primary Fact Sheet for additional information on finding ballot drop off boxes, important times to get your ballot in (8p) on election day etc.

Below are some links from area publications that have posted conversations with candidates. This is in no way the WSSCSW supporting any candidate but sharing information on all the candidates to encourage informed voting.

“Seattle voters have a slew of choices in Legislative races”
“2022 Questionnaire to candidates that would indicate their support for the priorities for Health Care All-WA”
The Arc: For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has posted some information from candidates here.

There are loads of published information out there. If you don’t see an issue important to you addressed above, please see your legislative pamphlet or encourage the groups close to your heart to engage with the candidates.

No matter who you vote for, please get out and vote. Let your voice be heard.

In Gratitude,
Lindsey Arrasmith
she/her
Interim Legislative Chair

Helpful Tips for Voting:
  • You can register online or through the mail until July 25 for the primary election on August 2, or until Oct. 31 for the general election on November 8.
  • Washington state also allows same-day registration in person, up to (and including) Election Day.

LCSWs at Risk: CareDash and BetterHelp

July 30, 2022

CSWA would like to call to your attention a duplicitous practice which a company called CareDash is engaging in. CareDash has partnered with BetterHelp to drive potential patients to CareDash or BetterHelp affiliated therapists. It has gathered information about thousands of LCSWs and other clinicians to direct them to CareDash or BetterHelp affiliated clinicians without the permission of the non-affiliated LCSWs listed.

If the LCSW is not affiliated with BetterHelp, CareDash will say that there is no way to connect with them through CareDash, without directing them to the website of the LCSW, or noting that this is an active licensed clinical social worker. CareDash receives a commission for all patients referred to BetterHelp.

CareDash also has its own list of LCSWs which they will only use for referrals if an LSCW affiliates with them. These practices could significantly reduce the ability of patients in gaining access to LCSWs who are not connected to CareDash or BetterHelp. Please note that if you are not on the CareDash list, patients will be directed to BetterHelp. CareDash at this point refuses to take anyone off their list who is not officially connected with them or BetterHelp.

There is little doubt that the CareDash list has been compiled from public lists such as NPI, insurers, and others, then made to look as if the LCSWs listed are not being artificially limited by CareDash.

Here is what CareDash said about me:

About

Laura W. Groshong LICSW (she/her) is a clinical social worker in Seattle, WA.

For new and existing patients, please see recommendations on how to schedule an appointment with Laura Groshong online. As a clinical social worker, she may specialize in Anger Management and Anxiety, in addition to other issues.

Laura Groshong got her license to practice in Washington.

If you want to see Laura Groshong, please contact her to book an appointment. You can also see how she compares to other clinical social workers in Seattle or get matched to an online therapy provider.

When anyone clicks on “schedule an appointment” or “book an appointment” they get the following message: “Laura Groshong has not provided a way to schedule online through CareDash. However, you could get connected with an online therapist or chat with our virtual assistant to get help finding a therapist.” There are then over 1000 mental health clinicians listed as “the best” clinicians in the Seattle area, all sponsored by BetterHelp, many of which offer 20% discounts for the first month.

Here is what CSWA recommends each member do to protect your practice:

1. Go to CareDash.com and see if you are listed as a member. Unless you are working for BetterHelp and want to remain on the CareDash list, send a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/. You will need the CareDash corporate address which is 614 Massachusetts Ave., Ste 400, Cambridge, MA 02139, and the BetterHelp corporate address which is 990 Villa Street, Mountain View, CA 94041.

2. You may also file a complaint with your state attorney general consumer protection department. To find the location of your state’s consumer protection department go to https://www.consumerresources.org/file-a-complaint/ .

3. A template for sending a complaint is found below:

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker writing to inform you that a company, CareDash, is unfairly restricting my practice as a clinical social worker. They have listed my professional information on their website without my permission and refer anyone who checks my name to another company, BetterHelp, or to their own list of clinicians. I do not wish to work with CareDash or BetterHelp. CareDash refuses to take my name off their list, claiming it is public information. Thus, CareDash is falsely marketing my services to generate online traffic for BetterHelp or itself, ultimately resulting in the selection of BetterHelp’s participating providers or its own, rather than me. This is a restriction of trade that should be stopped immediately.

CSWA encourages all members and affiliated societies to file complaints with the appropriate state and/or national organizations. Please let me know when you have done so.

Book Recommendation for August: It's Not Always Depression

Description: In It's Not Always Depression, pioneering psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel reveals the most effective techniques for putting us back in touch with the emotions we too often deny - methods which can be used by anyone, any time, anywhere. Drawing on stories from her own practice, she sheds light on the core emotions (such as joy, sadness and fear), defences (anything we do to avoid feeling) and inhibitory emotions (anxiety, shame and guilt), and how understanding their interaction can help us return to mental well-being. This is the basis of 'accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy:' it accelerates healing through having an emotional experience in the here and now. It allows you to reacquaint yourself with your feelings, to recover a more authentic self and to be more calm, curious and connected. Winner of Nautilus Silver for Personal Growth Books 2019
