Firstly, on behalf Michelle, myself and our whanau, a big thank you to our College community for the warm welcome home. A special nga mihinui to te whanau Aronui for the pōwhiri tautoko. Tauranga has always been our turangawaewae, so returning home, has been very special.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Mr Robert Mangan not only for his service to the College but personally, for the role he has played in supporting me as a student, a teacher and now as a leader in education. His wisdom and guidance throughout the years has proved invaluable. Robert has certainly left a legacy to be proud of and I will wear ‘Te Kahu Pono’, the sacred cloak to be worn as a reminder of the sacredness, prestige and warmth of our Maori Culture bestowed upon the Principal/Tumuaki to uphold the protocols and principles of the tribes of Tauranga Moana, with pride. I wish him and Linda all the best with the next chapter of their lives.
I would also like to acknowledge our Old Boys’ community and accept the ‘Toki Poutangata’ - the ceremonial adze, a symbol of chiefly authority and tribunal leadership and symbolic of the shaping of the school, staff and students. Thank you for your wero/challenge to continue to uphold the College’s traditions. The fact that we have such an active Old Boys' community, willing to engage with the College, is a credit to the College and the role it has played in instilling great values into men who now want to give back to the community that raised them. Nga mihi nui kia koutou nga tauira o mua o te kura. You are our Tuakana - older brothers, and we thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to the College. Our goal is to make you even prouder.
As an Old Boy of the College it is an honour to be able to pick up the mantle of Tumuaki/Principal. I take this challenge personally and will endeavour to work alongside our team to uphold the vision, mission and values of the College. To champion our quest to be:
We have a proud history of growing great young men both inside and outside the classroom. Our quest to be the best, starts with a commitment and attitude to being ‘better’. Waking up each morning and making a conscious choice to be better than the day before. For some of our boys that is as simple as getting to school every day, being at school/class on time, wearing the correct uniform, listening, asking questions, putting some more effort into their classwork, sports trainings or performance. It could be striving to be a better mate.
What that looks like, will be different for each student, but fundamentally, if we commit to being better every day, then one day, we could be the best! Tama tu, tama ora. Tama noho, tama mate - (“He who stands, lives. He who sits, perishes”).

STUDENTS OF THE TERM, TERM TWO

Year 9 - Jamie Locke
Jamie's teachers say that he has consistently excelled in his work and gets on with the task at hand despite any distractions that he may face. He is polite at all times and helpful to his classmates. His positive attitude makes him an asset to have in all his classes.

Year 10 - Riley Hudson
Riley's teachers say that he is a model student, shows great character and a good man attitude. He is very reliable and can work well unsupervised. Riley is very helpful and considerate and he assists his team in any way possible. He certainly has great potential to be a future leader by working well academically and motivating others around him.

Year 11 - Dylan Monteiro
Dylan's teachers say that he goes above and beyond in class and is a respectful and mature young man. He has a fantastic work ethic, welcomes advice to improve and is a strong critical thinker.
He goes above and beyond in class, putting in the work required to be amongst the top of his classes.

|
Year 12 - Kane McBrydie
Kane's teachers say he that is very diligent, not easily distracted, is polite and works hard. He has a good sense of humour and is a great student to teach. Kane is a fantastic academic with amazing dedication to his swimming training and performances and is always a positive influence in class.

|
Year 13 - Te Kirikau Blake
Te Kirikau's leadership within the Aronui community is huge. He is a great role model to the younger boys, showing and receiving respect from both teachers and students alike. In the classroom Te Kirikau has NCEA endorsed at Level 1 and Level 2 and is well on the way to doing the same at Level 3. Mahi nui kia mau tonu Te Kirikau!

CLAY TARGET
After winning Waikato Clay Target Competition hosted by Hamilton Boys', TBC was in good form to compete against schools from around the country. At the North Island Secondary School Champs many teams from the South embarked on a fierce battle, noting that TBC Clay Target is also the South Island Champs from 2021. TBC Clay Target went shot to shot and at the end fell 6 points below the winning team but took the podium as 2nd in Super 8 and 2nd in Teams.
We are very proud of our boys who held their heads high and didn't let the weather dampen their TBC spirit. Thanks to all the coaches, supporters and parents. We have now qualified to compete in the Nationals in Christchurch from 1-3 of October.

FOOTBALL
Congratulations to Sam Penny who applied to trial for the NZ Makos team.
Sam has been accepted into the NZ Men's Flag squad, being one of only 6 players selected nationally.

|
KARATE
Congratulations to Sam Crawford who recently competed in the NZ Open and NZ National Secondary Schools’ Karate Championships in Christchurch, winning Gold in the Secondary Schools U19 Kumite (fighting). Being granted dispensation to compete in the grades above, he then went on to gain Bronze in the Senior Male Kumite Open and Gold in the Male U21 Kumite in the NZ Open.
Sam has been selected to represent New Zealand at the 10th Commonwealth Karate Championships 2022 hosted in Birmingham, UK, in September and the 2022 WKF World Junior, Cadet and U21 Championships hosted in Konya, Turkey

NZSS NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
This event took place on 28th - 31st July and saw the best secondary school swimmers go head-to-head for the national title and the secondary schools seeking the top school gong. This competition had a particular focus on enjoyment and pride in representing their school, with lots of relays on offer to promote team swimming. Our boys had an excellent time throughout the weekend and completed some great team and individual swims.

TAEKWONDO
Over the school holidays the North Island Taekwondo Championships were held in New Plymouth. It was great to see four TBC students represented at this event, all doing really well in the competition.
Competing in New Plymouth on 16 July were:
Zane Henry - Year 12 - Placed 1st in Division (Black Belt Under 73kg)
Max Crozier - Year 12 - Placed 2nd in Division (Black Belt Under 73kg)
Tait Oyama - Year 11 - Placed 1st in Division (Black Belt Under 55kg)
Connor Minto - Year 12 - Referee at event
Nationals are being held in Auckland on 6th of August with the New Zealand team also being announced at this event.

BUSINESS STUDIES - LEVEL 3
|
|
|
|
A huge congratulations to Jed MacMillan and Maddix Kamo for being awarded the Tauranga City Council Seed Funding for their startup business. A panel of experts from Parliament NZ, Creative BOP, Tauranga City Council, Toi-Ohomai and Young Enterprise Scheme came together to judge their business on the goal of "what your YES business does to make our region a better place and impact our local community in a positive way". Their business won this award and received an allocation of $300.00 towards their business enterprise.
Jed and Maddix are extremely grateful for this opportunity and will be spending the prize money on building a social, idea-sharing platform that connects projects from across the globe. While they are grateful for the TCC funding, they believe this is only the beginning. They plan on focusing on building out the product, getting it to market and then seeking investment. We wish them all the best!

9NRN - TAURANGA ESCAPE ROOM
|
|
|
|
This outing wrapped up the class's novel study of 'The Maze Runner' with the trip giving the boys a chance to bond and gain a deeper understanding of characters and settings within the text.
The boys had approximately 90 minutes to work together and solve a series of puzzles to escape the room. The staff said that the boys worked well together and respected the rooms.

FUTURE PATHWAYS
Pathways, Gateway, Pasifika, Māori Achievement, Secondary-Tertiary Partnership

PATHWAYS
Planning for work and study opportunities continues at great pace. Our senior students are in the process of applying for an incredible variety of scholarships as well as finding themselves a halls of residence placement for next year. It is important to make applications for the halls as early as possible to guarantee a space and many of the boys have this process well under way. A number of the major universities have their scholarship applications closing on Friday next week so if the boys don’t have this underway, they need to get onto it.
Over the past two weeks we have had every Year 10 Social Studies class down in the Future Pathways Centre for an introduction to the Pathways world; the main purpose of this is to encourage the boys to make contact with the Pathways team and start considering their future.

GATEWAY
Wow, we have had a really busy couple of weeks. Many of our Gateway students have not returned to school after the holidays having secured full-time employment with some amazing companies. We wish them all well in their future pathways.

Gateway continues to provide great work place experiences for our young men.

PASIFIKA
This term we are running the Homo Haia Homework Hub (HHHH) again. This is a great opportunity that is provided by the Pacific Island Trust where students are able to gain up to two hours of specific tutoring from different subject areas.
This takes place once a week on a Wednesday after school where students can bring in current assessments, homework or study material that they are looking to get a jump on. We are currently gauging whether there is enough interest from students and if there is, we will do this again at the start of Term 4.

MĀORI ACHIEVEMENT
Next Wednesday, August 10th we are hosting a Year 11 Māori / Pasifika Pathways day in Aronui.
The aim of the day is to get students to consider their potential pathways and what they need to do, while they are at school to make their future plans a reality.
|

|
SECONDARY-TERTIARY PARTNERSHIP
The STP students are to be congratulated on the fine job they have done to date on construction of the garden sheds. With the very wet weather it was a relief to get the corrugated roof on to help keep out all of the rain we have been experiencing! The students have selected the colour scheme they think will be most appealing to the public and in a few weeks they will be ready to be transported off site.
- Congratulations to STP student Gareth Jones who has secured an apprenticeship at Nic de May Yachts.

INTER-HOUSE FOOD BANK APPEAL
Our school-wide Appeal starts Tuesday 16th August and finishes Tuesday 30th August. We hope that your son will have been asked if he can contribute an item from home. Any support in this regard will be greatly appreciated, however we do understand that this may be difficult in some circumstances and do not want to place unreasonable demands on your resources. Previously the support has been outstanding and we have been very pleased with what has been generously given by our community to this vital and very worthy cause. All non perishable food items will be gratefully received.
This year Food bank has identified the following items as being on their wish list:
Spreads - jam and peanut butter. Cereal - cornflakes and rice bubbles. Baking supplies - cocoa and icing sugar. Canned or packet soup, Canned fruit, Canned tomatoes.
We are having three bonus days where Form classes will receive double points for their contributions.
- Thursday 18th August - Tinned fruit
- Tuesday 23rd August - Cereal
- Thursday 25th August - Canned Tuna and Salmon, particularly large tins that can be used to make a family meal.
Prior to the commencement of our Appeal this year, all of our boys will be asked to contribute $1. These funds are being spent on much needed personal care items like shampoo, razors, deodorant, shaving cream, toothpaste and toilet paper. The Food bank has no budget for these items and relies solely on donations, and the shelf is almost bare!
Tauranga Food bank has seen an increase in the need for grocery support from people who are wage earners. They are still seeing accommodation costs as the major reason for income not being able to meet outgoings and food is often the only thing that can be adjusted in someone’s budget. They are seeing people’s food budgets showing a ridiculously small amount left available for food - at times as little as $30 a week to feed a family.
Tauranga Food bank no longer uses the term ‘Food Parcels’ as this does not truly reflect the support that Foodbank provides, and it is unempowering for people who need Food bank’s assistance. In the past year they have been able to provide support to 17, 123 people. The volume of food given is equivalent to more than 205,000 meals along with pet food, cleaning supplies and personal care items.
Thank you in anticipation for any contributions you are able to make to this very vital cause. Every little bit really does count.

TBC OLD BOYS' ASSOCIATION

The Bay of Plenty will soon have another fledgling footballer to cheer on in Europe as former Tauranga Boys’ College standout Jordan Toy prepares to say “bon voyage” to New Zealand and “bonjour" to French football.
The exciting winger has agreed a deal to join St Pierre de Milizac that will see the teenager playing football in the home of the current FIFA World Cup holders.

COMMUNITY DENTAL SERVICE
Te Manu Toroa provide FREE yearly treatment for adolescents up until their 18th birthday. Their Mobile Dental Caravan will be onsite here at Tauranga Boys' College next term and they will be seeing students who are enrolled with them (NB: your son can only enrolled with ONE Dental Provider).
If you would like your son to be seen by the Community Dental Service here at school, then please ensure that you complete a consent form (available from the Student Office) and return it ASAP.

Tauranga Boys’ College Uniform Shop has an ever-changing selection of second-hand uniforms for sale. We sell ‘on behalf’ of families and would like to suggest that any time from now on would be a good time to bring in unwanted items.
We have a large demand throughout December and January for uniforms in good condition that have been freshly washed. Payments are made once items are sold and it is done via internet banking so please bring your bank account details with you.

Our TBC Welfare Centre facilitates care and support for our boys in need. One initiative we have is to collect donations of unwanted second-hand Tauranga Boys’ College uniforms and we distribute these where most needed.

Matters involving college policy should go to the Principal, Mr Andrew Turner or in his absence, Associate Principal, Mr Ian Stuart or Deputy Principal in charge of Senior School, Mr Rob Gilbert, or Deputy Principal in charge of Junior School, Mr Leyton Watson.
Matters involving academic questions and class placements should be referred to the Tutors. They are:

Matters involving discipline - matters such as unexplained absences, loss of equipment, bullying, detentions, classroom behaviour etc. should be referred to the Assistant Principal in charge of Student Management, Mr Mike Akkerman, Associate Dean, Mr Ben Ormsby or one of the Year Level Deans:

Late lunches, forgotten appointments etc. need to be notified to the Student Office before 8.00am to catch the Daily Information Sheet (DIS). The office can deal with the range of information such as opening and closing times, illnesses, uniform shop times etc.
To make contact with any of these people ring the College Office on 578 4029. If the person you want it teaching at that time, please leave a message or have them call you back. Return calls are usually made during intervals and lunchtimes, when the teacher has a non-teaching period or after the teaching day ends at 3.10pm. If uncertain as to who to talk to, please ask the office staff.

- If your son is away for any reason please advise the school. You can do this via the parent portal. Login to www.tbc.school.nz using your son's ID and your parent portal login password. Or you can email attendance@tbc.school.nz or phone the school office on 07 578 4029. You can also monitor your son's attendance via the portal. If you son is unwell for more than 3 days a medial certificate may be requested. Text messages are sent home but not daily so it is recommended that you keep an eye on your son's attendance and if you have any concerns, please contact the school via either the attendance officer or your son's Dean.
- If your son is going to be out of school for an extended length of time, including sporting and cultural commitments, permission is required from the Principal. Please send your request to principal@tbc.school.nz

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS
DURING TERM TIME
|
|
|
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during the school term to travel domestically or internationally for holidays.
I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.
Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.
Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.
I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz
My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays. Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

School Health Service
The school nurses this year are Vicki (Mon-Thurs) and Stephanie (Thurs - Fri) who are fully registered nurses funded by the Western BOP Primary Health Organisation. The clinic is located down by the gym and there is no cost for the youth health services. This is in addition to the sickbay team at the main office with whom the nurses work closely, to provide best care to the boys at TBC. There is also a GP who does a short clinic each Monday for those who may face barriers to accessing their own GP.
In an attempt to support our young men with any challenges and to identify any barriers to learning at an early stage, health assessments may be done in Year 9 (or other years if required) and include a discussion around; physical health, growth and development, hearing, vision,activities, eating and weight, school and home, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, mood and safety (HEADDSS).

Student Physiotherapy Services onsite
Tauranga Boys' College has a partnership with Foundation Sports and Rehabilitation Clinic to provide FREE services to all students onsite. This means the boys limit time away from teaching and learning as they rehabilitate. The physio room is attached to Gym 2 and the Athlete Development room.
