BOOK PRESENTATION BY AUTHORS AND SIGNING

“Riveting . . . The narrative flows seamlessly as it explores the complicated legacies of Stephen F. Austin, known as the Father of Texas, and Sam Houston, the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, as well as the many places and institutions named in their honor. Bringing Mexican voices to the forefront, the authors argue that it is necessary to diversify perspectives in order to create a comprehensive historical narrative of Texas, and especially San Antonio. Not only an essential work of Texas history, but popular history at its best. The book shines when detailing the power of telling one’s own story.” —Library Journal

Christianity without Colonialism
Rev. Raquel C. Feagins
Christianity entered the Western Hemisphere through a process of European conquest and colonization that destroyed, displaced, assimilated, and incorporated indigenous cultures. In this presentation, Oblate School of Theology Doctoral Candidate Rev. Raquel Feagins presents an introduction to de-colonial criticism, interpretation, and spiritual practice, helping participants hear new voices and see new perspectives that are often suppressed or ignored within the dominant culture.

MISSIONS COMMITTEE
Thanks to assistant instructor Iris Montoya-Rodriguez.  Adult Vacation Bible School connected attendees in the conference room with  participants around San Antonio and a new United Methodist Global Ministries volunteer in Pennsylvania.  Attendees provided feedback to Global Ministries volunteers Bob Dygert-Gearheart (a retired UMC pastor) and Anita Dygert-Gearheart (a retired clinical social worker) who will publish the finalized curriculum in September.   If you missed the Adult VBS this year, you can access the study free of charge, as the authors are revising it online, at https://www.wakeupworld.earth/

Thursday Prayer Service
Thursday prayer service meets at 7 PM and is usually convened in the church chapel (sub-level, end of hallway).

Participants are encouraged to request hymns from our four music resources, to share inspiring scriptures and testimonies, and to lead intercessory prayers for many needs. The Spirit-led service alternates between a chosen hymn and spoken participation.  Individuals may also request the prayers of all in attendance. The service is not planned in advance and is not recorded or broadcast. Children and visitors are encouraged and welcome.

The service will convene throughout the month of August.
