A Letter from CEO Kathlene H. Campbell

As the new CEO of NCTR, I’m excited to lead such an amazing and impactful organization. During the last 60 days, I’ve met with the NCTR staff, board members, and partners as a way to learn more about the strategies and engagements that are working and how NCTR can continue to support and uplift our Network partners as we work towards ensuring all students have access to effective, diverse, culturally responsive educators. It is my belief that before we can continue to elevate, educate, and expand our understanding of teacher residencies, we must first listen. So, I’ve done just that. I’ve listened and asked questions to learn more about people’s perspectives and began to identify the commonalities and differences in the conversations. I appreciate everyone’s willingness to share their thoughts and ideas with me so that together we can ensure quality teacher preparation encompasses culturally affirming practices that prepare residents for today’s classrooms. Teacher Residencies In Action
The University of Southern Mississippi Receives Grant to Expand Teacher Residency Program
Congratulations to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) on the expansion of their teacher residency program to now support a graduate-level program after the rising success of their undergraduate residency program, the Golden Eagle Teacher Residency program.

Supported by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), the university has hired a new director to lead the graduate program that will provide opportunity for master's-level students to participate in the Mississippi Teacher Residency (MTR) program supported by MDE, while studying at USM. The new cohort of MTR students can graduate with blended master's degrees to teach in both elementary and special education settings. MTR students will also receive full-tuition scholarships, stipends, textbooks, and testing fees through the MDE grant.

The National Center for Teacher Residencies has provided guidance and support in the success of the undergraduate teacher residency program, in addition to the collaboration of MDE, MTR and USM. Read More

Aug. 11 Webinar Kicks Off Release of National Definition of Teacher Residencies

The National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) was founded 15 years ago, and every day our team works diligently to examine the residency model components, elements, and strategies alongside the school districts, community-based organizations, institutions of higher education, and states we partner with to design, launch, and implement teacher residency programs.

TextDescription automatically generatedAs a member of the Pathways Alliance -- a national coalition of leading organizations dedicated to supporting and implementing accessible, inclusive, quality educator preparation pathways -- NCTR is proud to have co-led a collaborative working group with a shared vision to co-construct the defining components and elements of the residency model in the release of a paper, titled "Towards a Shared Definition of Teacher Residencies," that will help bring clarity to the field's use of the term "teacher residency." Our hope is that the paper supports context-based discussions about residency design and improvements with local stakeholders and provides local, state, and federal leaders a condensed yet thorough definition to guide policies that can support high-quality residencies to attract, prepare, and retain a strong, diverse teaching workforce.

NCTR and Prepared to Teach will co-host a webinar on August 11 at Noon CST/1 p.m. EST to share the process and purpose for drafting the residency definition, which will be available on the Pathways Alliance website on August 11.
