Hazy Days of Summer here in the Vale of Pewsey
Here we are at the peak of summer in the UK - the schools have broken up and everyone is keen to get out and about after the last couple of years!  Harvest is well underway with the combines reaping the crops as we write this - and there are lots of farm stays for you to enjoy across the Vale.

There is also plenty to whet your appetite for getting outside here in the Vale of Pewsey.  Lots of walking and cycling routes can be downloaded from our website for you to follow on your phone or print out.  You can also find our leaflets in our Tourist Information Kiosks and locations and at many of our partner organisations such as the Crop Circle Exhibition at Honeystreet and Pewsey Heritage Centre, as well as in many of our local country pubs and accommodation partners.

If you are thinking about a longer break in the Vale of Pewsey, then have a look at our itineraries - walking and/or cycling routes to base your visit on with information on where to stay and eat, including our new long-distance route, the Pewsey Vale Circular Way.

This month, we are highlighting some of the events for you and your family to enjoy, as some interesting stories from around the Vale.

Make sure you get out and about this summer in the Vale of Pewsey and enjoy the stunning beauty of this very special location.  We are ready to welcome you!

And there's more!
Equilibrium, located in the wonderful Woodborough Yard, is running the Environ recycling scheme, which aims to reduce the amount of beauty and skincare containers that end up in landfill sites. Many councils are unable to recycle beauty packaging because it often contains mixed materials and elements that cause contamination but by bringing your empties back to Equilibrium, they can be returned to Environ who pass them to a specialist recycling firm who will then turn them into secondary products. You can take ANY beauty empties to Equilibrium, not just the brands they sell, and they will send them all off together so you can be sure they’re being recycled properly. However, if you return an empty Environ container, Equilibrium will give you £1 off your next purchase of the same product. The recycling bin is near the reception desk – pop in with your empties when the desk is manned (weekdays 9am-3pm) or when you come for your next appointment. If you’re returning Environ packaging, make sure you speak to someone to receive your credit, but any other brands’ packaging can go into the bin any time.
50 Things not to miss in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty!
As part of the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the North Wessex Downs, they have compiled suggestions for the very best of the AONB:  50 Things Not To Miss!
The North Wessex Downs became a protected landscape in 1972 – protected by law for the nation - and the Vale of Pewsey is in the south west of this special landscape.  For hundreds of years its natural beauty has inspired poets and painters, writers and wanderers and the team at the North Wessex Downs hope to inspire you with their selection.
Fifty things that are not-to-be-missed: places, experiences and wildlife which deserve a special mention.
Please share your journey through the list via their social media channels using #northwessexdowns50 – they would love to see your images and know what you think about their choice.  What would you have included?
Lots on at Crofton Beam Engines
See the oldest beam engines in the world in action at Crofton Beam Engines.
Saturday 30th July and Sunday 31st July sees a Restricted Steaming Weekend - this is restricted because of the lack of rainfall and availability of water for the Kennet & Avon Canal.  And if you are visiting Crofton this weekend, why not visit Wilton Windmill for their Family Fun Day (12 noon to 4pm) as well?
Saturday 13th August is Teddy Bear Picnic - Bring your picnic lunch and your favourite stuffed animal to Crofton Beam Engines for some crafts, games, songs and a self-guided tour of the Engine House.
Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August is another Steaming Weekend - hopefully not restricted but that will be confirmed closer to the date.

Crofton is open to visitors from 10.15am to 4.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.  There is no charge to enter the site on non-steaming days. There is a charge to visit the station itself to view the boiler and engines. Advance booking is not required on non-steaming days.  A perfect place for a picnic overlooking the canal in the glorious Pewsey Vale countryside!

In addition to our long-distance walking and cycling routes, we also have plenty of walks and cycling routes that take just a few hours to complete.  Lots of variety with landmarks along the way, you can download the walking leaflets from our website.

Country Pub Menu - The Bruce Arms
This month it's The Bruce Arms in Easton Royal, just east of Pewsey.  This CAMRA-recognised pub offers excellent camping, room hire and a 30-pitch campsite.  With local ales and a sunny beer garden, the Bruce Arms is also the starting point for a couple of our circular walks.  And it's dog-friendly too.
The kitchen is open Tuesday to Friday 12 noon to 3pm, Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 8pm with breakfast being served from 9am on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

In all, the Mid-Wilts Way is 67.7 miles (109 km) stretching from Ham in the east of the Vale of Pewsey to Mere in south west Wiltshire.
We have put a route together which follows this route from Ham to Martinslade, just west of Devizes - so about half of its entire length - with some diversions on the way so you can get off the beaten track and explore the Vale of Pewsey.
There is lots of information on our website, including where to visit, where to eat and where to stay as well as full details of all the detours.
