The fourth Wakeland novel will be out next spring, April if luck holds. Sunset and Jericho brings to a close a certain chapter in the life of the character and the city. Of the four novels, it’s maybe the angriest, maybe the saddest, quite possibly the best. If this sounds equally euphoric and eulogistic, I think that sums up the novel.

Here’s the first paragraph:

The view from the mayor’s outer office was something. Pearl-colored clouds had flung down snow all night, piling slim white barriers atop Vancouver’s roofs and awnings. A late morning rain was undoing the work, drowning Broadway in a slurry of gunmetal, platinum, and ash. On Cambie Street, caution lights pulsed. An accident of some sort. It was February, and the wrong people were dying.

You can pre-order Sunset and Jericho right now from Amazon or from any independent bookstore that uses Book Manager (Book Warehouse is my favorite). Pre-ordering is massively helpful to authors.

Sunset and Jericho will be on all the other sites (Chapters, Barnes and Noble, Indiebound) soon.

Hell and Gone made CBC’s list of “Twelve Mystery and Crime Books to Keep You On the Edge of Your Seat This Summer.” I’m thrilled!

I’m introducing the Gene Hackman private eye film Night Moves at the VIFF Theatre on Thursday August 4th. One of my favorite films. You can listen to the score on the late composer’s website here.

The Noir Short Story online course is under fifty bucks, which includes a critique of a piece of short fiction. Mystery Writing Mastery is just under $150.

Books: There are a ton of great new crime novels out, including some I had the privilege to blurb, and some I wish I’d had: In the Dark We Forget by SG Wong, Noonday Dark by Charles Demers, Ghosts of Paris by Tara Moss, and Things We Do In the Dark by Jennifer Hillier.

Daniel Francis’s Becoming Vancouver: A History is next on my TBR, the start of my research for the historical novel.

TV: We’ve been rewatching The Sopranos for the billionth time, so nothing new to report, other than I miss James Gandolfini.

Next month I’ll have a cover for Sunset and Jericho, some publishing news, and more.
Thanks for reading.
