Every artist understands the disappointment of showing your work to a friend or to the public, and not getting the positive reaction you hoped for. It might be a polite "that's nice" or even indifference as the viewer walks right by your work in the gallery.

Let me share a secret with you.

Their reaction is
NOT ABOUT YOU.

It really isn't. It isn't even about the quality of the work. It's about them. And that is a good thing.

Let me explain.

If you've followed me on social media over the past two months you've shared my travels all around the United States. So many experiences. So much to see.

During our family road trip I was fascinated by the weather. Here in N.C. we don't often get to see the horizon so watching the sky was soooooo enchanting. My companions weren't quite as absorbed by the sky as I was and I quickly learned not to force their attention. I would point out something then let them choose to be interested or not without being disappointed that they didn't geek out about it like I did.

The sky isn't good or bad. It just captures my attention in a way that speaks to where I am in my life right now. They aren't me.

People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.

The same idea holds true for art. What interested me might not interest you. The same work can be experienced by different people in different ways. And that is as it should be.

Every individual needs to be free to come to the work with their own lens of understanding.

If we all liked the same art - we would be robots. It's a GOOD thing that we all like different art. There is room for all kinds of art in this world.

I love to experience a work of art without reading the artist's statement first. I can create my own ideas, experience my own reactions, make my own associations. Sometimes I'm with a companion that enjoys reading the statements first to understand what the artist want's us to see.

These are both valid ways of experiencing art.

Be Generous.

Allow your viewer to experience your work without requiring them to see it exactly as you do.

Be Wise.

Understand that their experience is not yours. Their experience doesn't reflect on your worth as an individual or as an artist. A mature artist works to please their own heart, never trying to embody any voice but their own.

Follow Your Own Voice.

Nobody else sees the world as you do. Your voice is valid and worth hearing. Never stop making your art in exactly the way you need to make it.
