Resurgence, Resilience, Revival!!
TORONTO OPERETTA THEATRE’S 2022-2023 SEASON
Orpheus in the Underworld – Die Fledermaus – La Verbena de la Paloma

Toronto, 27 July 2022…Guillermo Silva-Marin, TOT’s General Director, announces the company’s return to the St. Lawrence Centre stage with a new season of musical entertainment from the wide world of Operetta and Music Theatre.   Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach’s riotous view of the hijinks in Hades, will be presented on October 21, 22, and 23 (3 pm) starring Vania Chan, Tonatiuh Abrego and Gregory Finney with Larry Beckwith conducting the orchestra.  During the holidays, Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, that ever fabulous send up of middle-class Viennese pretensions, opens on December 28 (3 pm) with further performances on December 29, 30 and 31, 2022.  Derek Bate conducts a cast featuring the debuting Kirsten LeBlanc, Andrea Núñez, Keith Classen and Scott Rumble. The Zarzuela of Spain takes centre stage on May 5, 6 and 7 (3 pm) with the Canadian Premiere of Thomas Breton’s La Verbena de la Paloma – the Festival of the Dove.  Kate Carver leads a Spanish speaking cast that includes Margie Bernal, Rómulo Delgado, and Stuart Graham. “We are so excited,” says Silva-Marin, “to be on stage again, with wonderful music, comedy and the joy of theatre shared with friends and family.”  All three productions will be fully-staged with orchestra.

In addition to these staged productions, TOT will present three Cabarets at The Edward Jackman Centre.  Intimate afternoons presented in a cabaret setting, patrons can enjoy a little song, a little laughter, and a glass of wine. The series begins on Saturday, October 1 - at 4 pm with At the Savoy with G&S, a head-spinning whirl through the works of Gilbert & Sullivan.  TOT salutes love and romance on Saturday, February 11 - 4 pm with A Fair Ladies Valentine. The Cabaret series concludes on Saturday, April 1 at 4 pm with Latin Fiesta, a sultry stroll through the music of the Hispanic world.

In addition to support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, the Jackman Foundation, the Dalglish Family Foundation, The Dianne and Irving Kipnes Foundation and Bedolfe Foundation, the company counts among its partners U Developments, Long & McQuade and Thunder Thighs Costumes, and media sponsor Classical 96.3 FM.

All operetta performances take place at the wheelchair-accessible St. Lawrence Centre for the Art, situated in the downtown theatre district, close to public transit and municipal parking. TOT’s Cabaret series will take place at the Edward Jackman Centre in Leslieville. (This venue is not accessible.)
