President's Message

Graham Melstrand
President, Coalition for the Registration of Exercise Professionals (CREP)

Summer is a time that many of us in the health, fitness, and academic settings take time to rest and recharge. I hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather and getting to spend some quality time with those they care about.
And just like all Summers before its’ end will culminate into the start of a new school year with many students beginning to plan for entering or returning to schools, colleges, and universities. For many this starts a new cycle of scheduling now that children return to school. For CREP and its member organizations, this summer has been action packed as we follow through on the key initiatives identified as priorities for 2022. Some updates to key initiatives include:
  • Collaboration between CREP and the NATA-ICSM – CREP and the NATA-ICSM produced the Inter-association Recommendations: Best Practices in Strength and Conditioning which has traction due to the support of 11 sponsoring organizations supporting institutional compliance with the requirements outlined in the NCAA Sports Science

Institute’s Inter-association Recommendations-Preventing Catastrophic Injury and Death in Collegiate Athletics document, which affirms the recommendations for the education, credentialing, training and reporting structures. It directs institutions to the US Register of Exercise Professionals (USREPS) to verify current strength coaching credentials with valid credentials.
As we move towards the fall semester, we will work closely with institutions to provide the resources they need to assess their current compliance and provide referrals to the resources and education they need to have in place to ensure the safest possible environment for student athletes competing in fall sports. CREP would like to recognize the U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health (www.USCAH.com) and thank them for their collaboration on this important initiative as a provider of tools and education necessary for institutions to implement the recommendations.
  • HEALTHY PEOPLE 2030 Champions – CREP named a CHAMPION by the US Dept of Health and Human Services’ Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP). The department recognize Champions for quality initiatives and activities that stand out among their networks.
  • Global Health Fitness Alliance – CREP and its member organizations are taking an active role with trade organizations and employers to help educate and inform the IHRSA affiliated Global Health Fitness Alliance on best practices in education and credentialing for exercise professionals. This group is working with government towards reaching their goal of fitness industry recognition as an essential provider of programs and expertise for health, fitness or sports performance.
  •  July 20th, IDEA World convention – CREP leadership participated alongside leaders from the employer, public policy/advocacy and academia in a panel discussion titled Becoming Essential-Next Steps to Align and Advance the Exercise Profession. The panel covered how exercise professionals can lean in and engage key stakeholders in government, public health and the medical communities.
  • CREP website refresh – Updates to the USREPS registry and website are coming. This is in response to feedback from stakeholders who use the register to identify and verify the credentials of registered exercise professionals working in athletic, fitness, and healthcare settings.

We hope to see you at an upcoming conference or event!

In health,
Graham Melstrand
