This month we interviewed Lukas Vincour, an activist and animal photojournalist from the Czech Republic. We asked him about his start as an animal photojournalist, his investigations and his upcoming documentary about resolute teenage vegans.

Lukas recently licensed hundreds of photos to us of farmed animals in the Czech Republic: goats, pheasants, sheep, ostriches and cows. Though the EU is often lauded for its animal welfare laws, these photos show us there is much work left to do.

(You can also read it in Czech.)

Feedlots in Canada

Cattle living in a feedlot. Canada, 2022.

While on assignment for another investigation, Jo-Anne and our new contributor Julie LP were able to document feedlots in Quebec, home to more than one million cattle. Many of these animals will spend a quarter of their lives confined to feeding barns like this. No outdoor access, save for poking their heads into their food trough. Conditions are often filthy, barren and crowded. And of course the cattle have no idea they are being fattened up before their slaughter.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped us meet our $15,000 matching goal last month - we raised $27,396, absolutely knocking it out of the park! Ari Nessel and our friends at Mobius are matching $15,000 of that, for a total of USD$42,396 - whoa.

You’ve helped us make sure these industries continue to be exposed, and that NGOs, media and advocates are equipped with the visuals they need to reveal the truth and create change. Thank you so much.
