The best seahawk stew you have ever tasted

By Ine Beerens

This classic seahawk stew is up there with some of the most difficult dishes I have ever cooked. But when you get it right, nothing beats it.

When I was little, going to the coast wasn’t the same experience as many Australians had. The beach wasn’t white, the water not a deep blue, and most of the time it was raining. Nevertheless, this dish has always reminded me of the wonderful times I spent at the seaside with my friends and family and brings me joy every time I make it.

Traditionally, you would use magpies, but if you want to really impress your guests you should use seahawks. It just gives that stew that extra kick that will leave everyone wanting more. The process is a little bit more difficult, as seahawks are pretty hard to catch. If you need it, I can give you the contact details of the best seahawk hunter in Australia, Sissi.

Now, the art of cooking is always in the preparation. I highly recommend spending the week beforehand in isolation with COVID and getting your taste back the night before. It is not a prerequisite though, but a must is the Friday night captains’ message that brings tears to your eyes. Catch those tears in a jar and set them aside for later, you will need them.

Time:
+/- 2h

Ingredients:

24 pounds of Seahawks, cut into inch cubes (tackling method highly recommended)
24 cups of relentless effort
4 goals
1 incredible backline
6 1/3 cups of quality centre clearances
1 game winning spoil
2 game changing coaches
30 tablespoons of voice

*Note: you will need a pressure cooker.

Instructions:

  1. Leave 4 seahawks wondering what just happened by putting Royza in the ruck. Add Greta and Eliza to the mix and you will get a first glimpse of what is to come.
  2. Use Lizzie to slice the seahawks up in cubes and place them in the pressure cooker, piece by piece. At this stage you should add the two game changing coaches, Dani and Gez, to make sure you don’t overcrowd.
  3. Cook the pieces by adding a powerful backline. The backline is an incredibly important ingredient, they bind everything together. Add a bit of KB and Power to really make sure the stew is a success. It’s a bit controversial, but you can start using Kylie here as well even though she is normally not part of the backline, it really works in this stew – trust me.
  4. Add your forwards to season the stew with a goals. Don’t add all the goals at once, you will need to let the stew simmer for the next 20 min before adding two more.
  5. Every 20 minutes you need to add 24 cups of relentless effort and 30 tablespoons of voice. There are many types of relentless effort, but my favourites one to use are: Grace holding off 3 seahawks at once; AP bumping a seahawk into the grandstands; Gigi and Rasche who always attack the footy first; and Betho who will always pick you up.
  6. For the final 20 minutes, add one more game-winning spoil and up the pressure until the final siren. Finally, put those tears you saved in the jar to good use et voilá, the best seahawk stew you have ever tasted.
Congratulation on 100 games Dylan Bushnell!

Bushy returned to the club this year after a sabbatical and we are so proud to be congratulating him on his century of games at the ANUAFC!

The record books show Bushy made an impact at the club immediately, claiming runner up the in the 2004 best and fairest and became a mainstay of the Griffos.

Mr Utility, Bushy is a real coaches player, able to be thrown into any role and have genuine game impact. Either in the guts, bouncing off halfback or as a small forward, wherever the coaches need a job done, Bushy is the one.

Congrats Bushy! Hopefully it’s not another 17 years for the next 100
It all started in 2018 with a choir and a Reclink Community Cup game and before we knew it, Lauren ‘Power’ Power was a staple in the Griffs back six. Known for her fierce attack on the ball and trademark ‘don’t argue’, Power is one of the best lockdown defenders in the comp. As well as her on field achievements, Power has some of the best dance moves around. What better way to celebrate 50 games than in The Big Dance!!
