New Art Gallery opens in Queen Edith's

If you ever feel like investing in some art, it's coming to you, with the opening of the AKA contemporary gallery off Cherry Hinton Road. There's a launch party next Friday night (26 August) and the gallery will host an exhibition called Catch 22 Artists! from 27 August to 15 October. This will include work by 22 painters, sculptors and printmakers of both locally recognised talent and international acclaim. Art lovers and collectors at the launch party can enjoy fizz, nibbles and ribbon cutting with Cambridge 105 DJ Alex Elbro, and an exciting selection of art spread over 3 rooms. Find out everything about the gallery, including a form to RSVP for the launch party, at akafineart.co.uk . AKA contemporary is at 54a Cherry Hinton Road, down the access road next to the EACH shop.

Congratulations to our sixth-formers

With A-level results out yesterday, we'd like to congratulate all of the many thousands of sixth formers who have studied over the past two years at the six schools and colleges in Queen Edith's which together educate over half of the entire county's A-level students. The current year 13 were those who had to cope with the GCSE chaos during the first lockdown, and deserve all the good fortune that might come their way. Best of luck to you all, wherever you're headed.

The locally-based Cambridge Science Centre is closed for the summer holidays, but is taking its PopUpScience roadshow to the Grand Arcade until 5pm every day to 28 August. This summer the theme is space, and there's a chance to try out hands-on exhibits, take part in shows or have a go at an activity.

A few spaces are available on Lesley Rumble's Wednesday Watercolourist classes which start on Wednesday 14 September. The ten-week course is held in the community room in St James’ Church on Wulfstan Way, with one group in the morning and another in the afternoon. The classes are suitable for complete novices, to experienced watercolourists. Lesley has many years’ experience both as a teacher and as an exhibiting artist with the Cambridge Drawing Society, East Anglian Watercolourists, Cambridge District Art Circle and Cambridge Open Studios. Young volunteers do great job at garden

A group of National Citizen Service (NCS) students, all aged between 15 and 17 years old, have been working hard this week to tidy and improve Joy's Garden on Baldock Way. The NCS programme aims to engage young people in their communities; and create more understanding about their responsibilities as a citizen. We think they've done a great job in this much-loved community space and are very grateful to them for their time.

Bike theft warning

We want to warn readers about attempted bike theft from the racks outside Wulfstan Way shops. One particularly cunning method used by thieves is to attach their lock to the bike (either locking it to something, or just through the front wheel). The owner is forced to abandon it for the time being, since they can't detach it and ride it. The thieves return at night, remove their own lock and cut through yours. Do be careful!

Pink bins for unwanted small electrical items

450 tonnes of small electrical equipment such as kettles, toasters and computer equipment gets put into black bins every year in Greater Cambridge. Now the area's Shared Waste Service has put pink collection banks at various recycling points for this sort of product. The closest ones to us are in Gwydir Street car park, off Mill Road, and at the big Tesco 'Fulbourn' store on Yarrow Road, Cherry Hinton. Anything up to 29cm in its largest dimension, with a plug, battery or cable can be recycled. Full story here.

Food Hub news

The Queen Edith's Community Food Hub is open tomorrow (Saturday) as usual, from 10.30am to 12noon at St James Church on Wulfstan Way. All in need are welcome, no questions asked. The Coffee Chat is open too.

Food donations may be brought to the church on Saturday mornings from 10.00am to 10.30am. The team tells us it's usually particularly in need of tinned beans (not baked beans) and tinned fish, but all contributions are welcome.
