Bettering the Block: City Launches Pilot Project to Tackle Safety

During the summer, residents and business owners in the Lake Street corridor, in the West Broadway business district in north Minneapolis, and along Franklin Avenue may have noticed an increase in City of Minneapolis employees exploring ways to improve safety and livability. This concentrated focus is an intentional part of a pilot program called Bettering the Block. The City and Hennepin County partners took a grassroots approach to understand the needs of the three areas.

Inspired by the Block by Block initiative that began in 1995 in Louisville, Kentucky, which transforms downtowns with cleaning, safety, hospitality and outreach services, Interim Police Chief Amelia Huffman wanted to pursue a way to incorporate public safety differently and improve communities in a tangible manner.

Read more about Bettering the Block on the City website.

Cedric Alexander Sworn In as City's First Community Safety Commissioner

On Aug. 8, the City swore in Cedric Alexander as the City of Minneapolis’ first community safety commissioner. Mayor Frey has issued executive order 2022-02 formally vesting the commissioner with the authority to oversee and direct the City’s community safety departments, including Police, Fire, 911, Emergency Management and the Office of Violence Prevention.

The executive order formalizes the commissioner’s role in helping shape the new Office of Community Safety alongside policymakers.

City Seeking Applicants for Blue Line Extension Community & Business Advisory Committees

The City of Minneapolis is seeking applications for the Blue Line Extension Community Advisory Committee (CAC) and Business Advisory Committee (BAC). These committees serve as voices of the residents and businesses in the project corridor by advising the Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County on how the project can best serve the neighborhoods and businesses near the line.

With the Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County’s endorsement of the recommended route for the Metro Blue Line Extension light rail project in late June, the project is moving forward with its environmental, design, anti-displacement, and public engagement work. To help guide this work, the project team needs your perspectives.

Applications are due at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29. For more information and to apply, visit the City’s project website or contact Brey Golding at Breyonne.Golding@minneapolismn.gov.

Free Violence Prevention Training

Adults who live or work in Minneapolis and want to be more actively involved with violence prevention are welcome to a free training Aug. 20. Sign up by Aug. 19. Sessions are offered about every three months.

If you complete the training, you will receive a certificate of completion, have access to violence prevention resources, be invited to monthly spotlight trainings to continue building your skills, and have continued support and networking opportunities with fellow community champions.
