October - National Safe Work Month and NSW Mental Health Month

October marks National Safe Work Month and NSW Mental Health Month.

National Safe Work Month is an initiative by Safe Work Australia that runs in October each year. Safe Work Australia asks workers and employers across Australia to commit to safe and healthy workplaces for all Australians.

Mental Health Month is celebrated each year in the month October. This month encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not. It also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of good mental health in our everyday lives and encourages help seeking behaviours when needed.

The WHS Unit is currently in the process of developing a calendar of activities, webinars and resources to celebrate these two events. This will be released at the beginning of October via Universe and the Safe@Work website.

Bikes on Campus

Did you know that UOW has a range of bicycle and cycling facilities?
The Wollongong Campus is only a short ride away from Wollongong CBD and surrounding suburbs and can often be quicker than driving, especially during peak periods.
Riding your bike to work can not only reduce congestion on the roads, it can also benefit your body by decreasing the risk of getting cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and depression.
UOW has some fantastic resources for bicycle riders including Bike Bases, Bike Sharing and Repair and Maintenance Stations.

Lemon Risotto

Lemon's are currently in season and have a wide range of nutritional benefits including being an excellent source of Vitamin C!

Ingredients:
  • 1.25L (5 cups) Massel chicken style or vegetable liquid stock (Use gluten-free stock to make this gluten free)
  • 20g butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 leek, pale section only, washed, thinly sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 440g (2 cups) arborio rice
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) white wine
  • 2 lemons, rind shredded
  • 60ml (1/4 cup) fresh lemon juice
  • 30g (1/3 cup) finely grated parmesan
  • Shaved parmesan, to serve
Method:
  1. Bring stock to the boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat and hold at a gentle simmer.
  2. Heat the butter and oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Add the leek and garlic, and cook, stirring often, for 4 minutes or until soft but not coloured. Add the rice and stir over medium heat for 2 minutes or until the grains appear slightly glassy.
  3. Add the wine and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until almost absorbed. Add a ladleful (about 125ml/1/2 cup) of the simmering stock and stir constantly with a wooden spoon until completely absorbed. Continue to add the stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring constantly and allowing the liquid to be absorbed before adding the next ladleful, for 25-30 minutes or until rice is tender yet firm to the bite and the risotto is creamy.
  4. Remove from heat. Add half the lemon rind. Stir in the lemon juice and grated parmesan. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Divide the risotto among serving dishes. Top with shaved parmesan and the remaining lemon rind to serve.
