Workshop Activities

Mixed Methods Program Workshop Updates

Building off the momentum from previous years, the University of Michigan Mixed Methods Program (MMP) hosted a wide range of live, online workshops in 2022. In March, the MMP associate director Dr. Tim Guetterman led a workshop that introduced the fundamentals of MAXQDA, a software program that can be utilized for qualitative and mixed methods analysis. Through this one day workshop, participants had the opportunity to do some hands on work, conducting analysis and constructing joint displays of integrated results. Also in March was the Advances in Mixed Methods Analysis and Integration workshop, facilitated by Drs. Michael Fetters and Sergi Fàbregues. In this workshop, participants who have initiated data collection worked with MMP faculty to incorporate advanced analysis and integration procedures into their projects.

In June, Drs. Tyler G. James, Melissa DeJonckheere, and Paul Chandanabhumma facilitated the Designing & Conducting a Mixed Methods Dissertation or Thesis workshop. Participants of all stages of their dissertation/thesis project gathered to learn about state-of-the-art mixed methods research design in order to incorporate them into their own work!

In November, the MMP hosted two workshops: Qualitative Research: From Design to Dissemination aimed to provide participants with an introductory overview of qualitative research methods. Thanks to facilitators Drs. Melissa DeJonckheere, Jane Forman, Mary Byrnes, and Paul Chandanabhumma, participants had the opportunity to engage in collaborative exercises related to study design, data collection, and analysis.

For the Designing a Mixed Methods Research Project workshop co-led by Dr. Tim Guetterman and Dr. Tyler James, we welcomed Dr. Cheryl Poth from the University of Alberta as one of the keynote speakers. Dr. Poth shared her current work on crossover analysis as a mixed methods integration strategy, pushing us to explore new possibilities in our understanding of how to integrate qualitative and quantitative strands in mixed methods studies. The MMP workshops offers opportunities for participants to not only deepen their knowledge and skills but also to be exposed to some of the cutting edge and innovative advances in mixed methods research.

MMP International Visiting Scholar Spotlight

Wonsuk Lee: MMP International Visiting Scholar 2021-2022

Wonsuk Lee, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at Sangmyung University, Korea, and joined the MMP in 2021 as an international visiting scholar. Receiving his PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his expertise is program evaluation, mixed methods, and alternative student assessment. Dr. Lee’s methodological research has focused on the integration of qualitative and quantitative data and the enhancement of the role of qualitative inquiry in mixed methods. In the field of program evaluation, he has concentrated on responsive and democratic, value-engaged approaches to evaluation.

During his time as a visiting scholar, Dr. Lee was active in the MMP. He worked closely with Dr. Mike Fetters on Dr. Lee's mixed methods research: A mini-evaluation on the Economics Teacher Training Program for social studies teachers in Korea. Dr. Lee writes how this was a precious experience as he learned "not only the systematic and synthetic way for conducting mixed methods research but also the attitude of mixed methods research," also adding the importance of optimism and passion in both conducting research and living life. Dr. Lee also participated in the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 workshops as a participant, and in the Summer 2022 workshop as a consultant. Finally, Dr. Lee presented his work at the Qualitative and Mixed Methods Learning Lab (QMMLL), where he mentioned that he received important feedback and learned some cutting-edge mixed methods skills. While Dr. Lee's year as a visiting scholar concluded this past summer, he writes that his experience provided him with ideas and insights on how to conduct mixed methods workshops in Korea in the future.

When asked about what he misses about Ann Arbor and the MMP, Dr. Lee writes "I miss Ann Arbor’s trees, the birdsongs of the morning, and the blue sky with clouds of various shapes. I miss the snowy Huron Hills golf course where I used to sled with my son. I miss the workshops full of passion, curiosity, and novelty for mixed methods research. And, I miss the fun and cheerful parties that the family members of the MMP had at Mike’s house after the workshops were done successfully. However, I firmly believe that these pleasant memories about Ann Arbor/MMP will not end up just as memories. I heartily hope that I’m going to have opportunities to make a more pleasant and productive Mixed Methods journey with the family members of the MMP in near future."

Thank you Dr. Lee for your scholarship and everything you have contributed to the MMP and the field of Mixed Methods!

MMP Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Melissa DeJonckheere and the MYHealth Program

Melissa DeJonckheere, PhD, Assistant Professor with the Department of Family Medicine and Co-Director of the MMP, has recently received a Science Education Partnership Award funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for her work with MYHealth (NIH R25 GM137361).

MYHealth is a research training program for high school students in Southeast Michigan. Students participate in a year-long virtual program to be trained as co-researchers by designing and implementing a research study in a topic of their interest using MyVoice. Led by MMP associate member Dr. Tammy Chang, MyVoice is a national survey of 14 to 24 year olds that uses text messaging to collect youth’s thoughts and opinions using open-ended survey questions. Throughout the academic year, MYHealth students design survey questions, analyze the qualitative responses, and work in teams to determine and share findings. Students have the option to return to the program for a second year and serve as peer leaders to first-year students, guiding them through their research projects.

When asked what Dr. DeJonckheere appreciates about this program, she writes that the project "positions high school students as collaborators in research, which has important implications for their interest and engagement with science and research. As students lead real-life research on topics that are interesting to them, we expect that they will be able to envision themselves in future research careers." With the program currently in the academic-year phase, the focus is on training and supporting the high school students to carry out their own research on adolescent health topics. It is during this phase that the students will have the opportunity to collect text message survey data from youth across the country and learn more about research questions that are important to them. Dr. DeJonckheere writes that in future years, the hope is to increase the reach of the program by engaging more students and invite them back to mentor the next cohort of participants.

Mixed Methods Program Collaboration

A Bergman and Bergman Publication

Drs. Zinette Bergman and Manfred "Max" Bergman, both MMP visiting scholars, recently collaborated and published the article "Toward Sustainable Communities: A Case Study of the Eastern Market in Detroit" in the Journal of Sustainability

When asked about the motivation behind the work, they expressed that studying how individuals, groups, institutions, communities, or regions are transitioning towards sustainability is of interest to them. As around the world, people are developing and implementing creative and effective solutions that are making communities more inclusive, resilient, healthy, and sustainable, they write that "By studying examples such as the Eastern Market in Detroit we hope to uncover some of the mechanisms that make these initiatives so successful, and to better understand how these solutions can be transferred and scaled to others contexts and cultures. In this context, we are especially interested in the Midwest and so-called rustbelt cities and their surroundings."

Drs. Bergman and Bergman are currently studying similar mechanisms in the Blue Zones Project in Fort Worth, Texas; divvy bikes in Chicago, Illinois; as well as the revitalization of cities, specifically in South Bends, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio. They hope to explore grass-roots initiatives in Detroit from a case study and mixed methods perspective next year.

Mixed Methods Course at Basel University, Switzerland

Program members Drs. Michael D. Fetters and Chihiro Tajima recently co-taught a mixed methods research course in Basel, Switzerland in collaboration with Dr. Max Bergman. This intensive credit course on fundamentals of mixed methods research at Basel University in Switzerland ran from September 19 to 23, 2022.

Founded in 1460, Basel University is located along the scenic Rhine River and is one of the oldest universities in Switzerland. The university routinely ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. The five-day-workshop entailed on day 1 a brief overview of mixed methods research followed by a “mixed methods treasure hunt”. The treasure hunt required students to read an exemplary empirical mixed methods article, and search for 12 essential mixed methods integration features. In an interactive format, students also engaged in lectures and through small groups they worked together on worksheets. Each group was assigned to one of three core mixed methods designs and were tasked to develop a mixed methods research proposal to investigate resistance to receiving the COVID vaccination. Through intense work on a core design in groups, and on all three core designs as a class, students could apply

As team work is critical in mixed methods research, students were encouraged to incorporate their unique world views and experiences while designing their projects. As an additional incentive, students were advised at their design proposals would be evaluated from the perspectives of a funding agency to encourage competition between the groups. Through poster presentations, on the final day, they demonstrated how outcomes can be differ depending on the design employed.

Dr. Fetters serves as Professor of Family Medicine, and co-founded the MMP in 2015. Dr. Tajima serves as Associate Member of the MMP, is a former Senior Visiting Scholar (2020-2021), and works as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Intercultural Communication, Gakushuin Women’s College, Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Tajima also serves as Marketing Co-Chair of MMIRA: Mixed Methods International Research Association. Dr. Bergman serves as Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at University of Basel, and currently serves as a Visiting Scholar of the MMP.

Publish a Media Review with the Journal of Mixed Methods Research!

The Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR) invites potential reviewers to write media reviews for the journal. The media review, up to 1,000 words, provides critical reviews of books and software that are of interest to mixed methods researchers.

Interested reviewers should have some familiarity with mixed methods research. If interested, please contact Tyler G. James, Associate Editor for Media Reviews at jamesty@med.umich.edu.

JMMR serves as a premiere outlet for ground-breaking and seminal work in the field of mixed methods research. Of primary importance will be building an international and multidisciplinary community of mixed methods researchers. JMMR invites articles from a wide variety of international perspectives, including academics and practitioners from psychology, sociology, education, evaluation, health sciences, geography, communication, management, family studies, marketing, social work, and other related disciplines across the social, behavioral, and human sciences.
