| Good morning to you! This weekend there isn’t a whole lot to do as far as events unless you want to hear good live music. There’s a lot of that around - just have a look at the schedule of local events below. Last week I promised that I would tell you about upcoming events so that you could plan things to do over the last summer holiday. Here is a sneak peek. You can also check out this week’s paper or our online calendar for details on all of the events! |

The Oak Island Arts Guild will be hosting its 31st annual Arts and Crafts Festival again this year at Middleton Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there’s the Go Jump in the Lake Run and Walk to raise funds for New Hope Clinic Saturday morning at Spring Lake Park in Boiling Spring Lakes, the Labor Day Surf Off at Ocean Crest Pier starting at 8:30 a.m. (all day) in Oak Island, and the Southport Lions are hosting a car and truck show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Howe and Bay Street in downtown Southport with live music by The Back Porch Rockers. So whether you like to surf or run (and jump in a lake when you finish!), check out classic cars, or browse and shop arts and crafts, get ready for a super busy day. I’m going to somehow get to them all and take photos for the next week’s paper, so if you’re at any of these events, please say hello! As always, I hope you all have a great Friday and weekend. |

GOOD TO KNOW |
Today is National Women’s Equality Day. This day commemorates the struggles of women to be heard, as fierce advocates who gained the statutory right to vote. Also known as women’s suffrage, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees all American women the right to vote. It’s a good day to be a dog. Today is National Dog Day. Although, some would argue that every day is Dog Day. According to a recent Forbes Advisor survey of states with the most spoiled dogs, NC came in 37th. Check out the article to see just how far folks are going to pamper their pooches across the U.S. Don’t worry, beach happy - This Tuesday is National Beach Day! Seas the day! Go catch some high tides and good vibes. Remember, if you’re not barefoot, then you’re overdressed. Ohh, my baby just-a wrote me a letter… The Box Tops released The Letter in 1967. Is it a lost art? Thursday, Sept. 1st is World Letter Writing Day. Who will you pen a note to? Rebuilding to the beat - Young Ukrainians use techno parties to rebuild villages. “Volunteering is my lifestyle now,” said Tania Burianova, an organizer with the Repair Together initiative. “I like electronic music and I used to party. But now it’s wartime and we want to help, and we’re doing it with music.” (AP NEWS). Read the article here. Blame it on the Glutamate - Apparently intense cognitive work over prolonged periods causes an accumulation of toxins in the prefrontal cortex which messes with your ability to think clearly and make decisions. Read the Science Daily article here. I’m going to go take a nap now. Science just gave me permission. ICYMI (in case you missed it) - Cool new Jupiter pics from the Webb NIRCam. DYK (did you know?) - There’s a local bookstore in Southport that has over 10K gently used books, DVDs, and CDs - most priced under $1. Check out the FOLSOI Once More Bookstore. Ha Ha - If the internet had a boat, where would they keep it? Google docs. Want more laughs? | They say that all good things must come to an end. In the case of the GOOD NEWSLETTER, they just change a bit! As the summer comes to an end, so does my time at The Pilot. Now that this edition is a wrap, I’m handing over the reins of the newsletter to my friendly colleagues. They’ll continue to bring great content to your inbox each week, sans the videos for now. Moving forward, your newsletter will be sent to you from “hello@stateportpilot.com.” This is also the address to send your happy stories, inspiration, kind notes, and questions about the newsletter to in the future. It’s encouraging that despite all of the negativity “in the collective” we can still come together as neighbors to share the simple things that bring us joy. |
