Pastor's Note

Dear Friends in Christ at Redeemer,

Just down the street from us, at 24th and Wisconsin (in the old County Hospital building), stands the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language (MACL), an MPS school serving 500 students, K-8. Approximately 40% of the student body come from refugee families new to Milwaukee; 60% from nearby neighborhoods.

You may have seen the headline today that MPS is struggling to find a teacher for each classroom this fall. Well, a few weeks ago, the art teacher at MACL began networking to find volunteer adults to provide presence in classrooms where no additional help is funded or found.  I met with Rebecca at Redeemer, and later that morning Pastor Mike, Tim and I went over to the school as part of our Neighborhood Mapping. We got a tour of the school (clean, bright, climate-controlled, ready for students) led by the principal, a refugee from Laos in 1983.

Before I go on further, here’s a link an outstanding NBC news story that shows you the school and their work:
https://www.nbcnews.com/now/video/how-the-international-newcomer-center-introduces-refugee-children-to-the-u-s-137218629535?fbclid=IwAR1pmDWXFUkQ32wmRKSja09JacT7XT3Ox_AohgXGRp295AkAvAyh7mrDzuQ

I’m thrilled that the Holy Spirit is making a connection between Redeemer and MACL.  Rebecca has worshipped with us and is interested in joining as an associate member in October.  I have submitted my application to volunteer at the school on Wednesdays beginning next month.  They need volunteers just about everywhere; I’m looking forward to reading with the littlest ones!

Here’s the letter I received that led me through the easy process of volunteering.  Are there more Redeemer folk interested in joining me?

Thank you for expressing interest in volunteering at Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language (MACL) during the 2022-23 school year!  We are so grateful that you would like to become part of our school community to support our students and staff!

The onboarding process has two components: At the district level, Sophia Smith of Volunteer Services will be on the receiving end of your online registration (link below) and will coordinate your background check (at no cost to you).  Ampire Ntabala, MACL Parent Coordinator and I will coordinate the volunteer program at MACL.  We are still working on the onboarding process specific to our site and will be in touch with details specific to your schedule, role, and orientation once your application is processed.

Below you will find the steps to get started.  The application process may take several weeks once the application is submitted due to the heavy volume in early fall.
To begin the registration process and to find resources about this process:
  1. Go to the link for the MPS Volunteer webpage: https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/Community/Get-Involved/Volunteer.htm
  2. Click on “Click here to apply!” near the top center of the screen.
  3. Under Quick Links on the right, click on: “Online Volunteer Application.”
  4. When prompted to select a “Volunteer Assignment Preference,” choose: “Classroom Assistant.”
  5. When prompted to select a school, choose “Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language” from the drop down menu for both “1st Choice” and “2nd Choice.”
  6. The form requires that you enter your availability, but we will work with you when we are further along in the process to accommodate your desired day/ time.
  7. Let Rebecca know that you have completed the online application and await approval emails from Sophia Smith and Rebecca Moczulewski to finish the onboarding process.
Your help is truly appreciated!  MACL students are eager to learn and will benefit greatly from having additional caring adults to support them in the classroom

Pastor Mick Roschke, my mentor in urban ministry, emphasized the essential relationship between churches and their neighborhood schools. I’m pleased that this opportunity has arisen at such a critical time.

Peace, Pastor Lisa
