Week 5
Chapter 5: Meals as Enacted Salvation
(Luke 22:7-20)
Launch Question: The author asks what difference it would make if your church stopped celebrating communion (102). As you consider the lack of a full communion celebration during the Covid-19 quarantine, what impact do you think it had on your life and the Body of Christ?
- Read Luke 22:7-20. Luke emphasizes (five times) that Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples was a Passover Meal. What role did meals play in the formation of God's people as the nation of Israel (pp. 106-112)?
- In what ways does sin-shame distort our relationship with food and all other relationships (pp. 103-106)?
- How is the new covenant of Christ's redemption embodied in the communion meal (pp. 112-114)?
- Why is it important that we think of the Lord's Supper as more than a "picture" but a "real thing begun in a partial way" (pp. 114-119)?
- As a church within a busy, fragmented, narcissistic, and self-promoting culture, what does the regular celebration of the communion meal do for us (pp. 119-124)?
- In response to what you have learned, how will you approach worship this week?

Disaster Relief for Kentucky
Once the floods in Eastern Kentucky subside, we will have opportunities to provide relief to those affected by the disaster. Currently we are looking for financial donations which should be directed to St Johns Parish Church and include Kentucky flood relief in the memo line.
We will be putting together flood buckets that will include infant and school supplies. More details to follow. On site relief will also include supporting the food kitchens out of a school cafeteria and delivering the flood buckets. Stephen Haynsworth is our Parish Disaster Response Coordinator and will be providing more details soon.
Anglican Relief and Development Fund® (ARDF)
ARDF has trusted partners willing and able to respond to crises. You can support them by donating to their Joseph Fund. This fund exists to get funds out quickly to churches and affiliated nonprofits to support the efforts of volunteers responding to the crisis.
If you would like to support this cause, you can either donate through St. John's Parish Church and write Anglican Relief Fund or ARDF on your gift or go to the Anglican Relief Donation Page https://ardf.org/joseph-fund.
