Author Rita Gabis comes from a family of Eastern European Jews and Lithuanian Catholics. She was close to her Catholic grandfather as a child, but as an adult, she discovered an unthinkable dimension to her family story: from 1941 to 1943, her grandfather had been the chief of police under Gestapo leadership in the Lithuanian town of Svencionys. Gabis’ exploration into this truth of who her grandfather was and what he had done resulted in her memoir, A Guest at the Shooter’s Banquet.

From WWII to the Space Race: The Story of Project Paperclip

Between 1945 and the 1960s, the United States government brought more than 1,500 German scientists and engineers into the country through Project Paperclip to work on guided missiles, jet and rocket engines, aerodynamics, aerospace medicine, and submarine technology. Join the Museum for a program exploring Project Paperclip with Dr. Michael Neufeld, Senior Curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and author of Von Braun: Dreamer of Space, Engineer of War, and Eric Lichtblau, author of The Nazis Next Door: How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitler’s Men. New York City could not have grown into a great metropolis without its historic and efficient water-supply system. Starting at the watersheds in upstate New York, we will follow the flow through streams, tunnels, dams, and reservoirs to learn how these gravity systems deliver clean and safe drinking water to the city. Then, inspired by our water supply system, we will play Water Works, a fun card game where the objective is to be the first to build a completely leak-free pipeline!
