I began listening to pop music when Elvis Presley wasn't on the radio much. In a time before streaming, I learned the hits (and near hits) through Oldies radio and record collecting. I finally realized the true magnitude of his stardom from the listener reaction on Aug. 16, 1977. The 45th anniversary of Elvis' death is next week. Here's what Elvis shows us about how listeners learn older songs and how catalogs endure. (I also took a listen to Sirius XM's Elvis Radio.)
