A News Source for Friends of Duke Urology  •  Summer 2022
Note from the Division Chief

Dear faculty, residents, alumni, and friends of the Duke Division of Urology,

It's no coincidence that we've collectively deemed summer as the time to take vacation - summer spans the most beautiful months of the year and is an optimal time to get outside and enjoy the sunny days before the cool fall breezes take hold and herald the dark and cold winter months.

It has been well documented that taking time to recharge, both physically and mentally, has tremendous positive impacts on our wellbeing. Going on a summer vacation is a great way to recuperate, and I hope many of you have been able to enjoy some time away.

But it's also important that we find ways to reap the same benefits of a vacation in our day-to-day lives. This is something I've been working on, and it has meant finding an activity where I can be engaged in the task at hand and not be distractive by the stresses of the day or the never ending "to-do list".

For me, the activity where I can allow my mind to reset is gardening. Some of you know that gardening has long been something I've enjoyed, and I've been working on adding elements of mindfulness to this hobby. This has meant shifting my focus not to the end result, but to the process - allowing myself to be fully immersed in the experience.

While I have a lot of more to learn about the practice of mindfulness, having a few moments of my day where I can concentrate on the beauty around me and take in the sights and sounds without distraction has been beneficial in helping me manage stress, boost my focus, and improve my patience.

If you're interested in learning more about mindfulness, Headspace, is a great resource (you can try it for free!) - and if gardening is also and interest of yours, you can read more tips about mindfulness in gardening here. I'm always happy to chat, compare, and commiserate with my fellow wanna-be horticulturalists!

As wee move into the fall season when school is back in session and schedules get busier, I encourage each of you to continue finding your own ways to recharge. In doing so, you've investing in your own wellbeing while building a healthier and more productive life.

After an evening with the faculty, she gave the David F.
