The Flower Power Issue

The Joy Of Flowers

Spring may be known as the season of flowers. The truth is, flowers are a joy we can revel in all year long — the colors just change a bit. Whether you’re in a good mood or feeling down, flowers have a way of making the day a little brighter. The best part is you don’t need an excuse to pick up a fresh bouquet, either.

But if you’ve ever stared at an arrangement and wondered how someone managed to bring individual stems together in a magnificent display, get ready to learn the tricks of the trade from an experienced flower farmer and flower arranger.

We’ve partnered with Salon member Becca Myerburg of Eleven Mile Farm just outside of Pittsburgh for two amazing flower workshops in September. Chances are you won’t become an expert flower arranger overnight. But no matter if you join us for our Floral Arrangement class or Fall Wreath Making session, you’ll walk away with a stunning creation of your own making.

Until next week,

Channel Your Creativity With The Art Of Flower Arranging

We’re excited to announce two new flower-fueled Salon events scheduled this fall. Entrepreneur, floral farmer, and owner of Eleven Mile Farm Becca Myerburg will teach us how to make beautiful fall-themed wreaths during a Wreath Making workshop on September 7. Then, on September 10, she’ll lead us through a Floral Arranging workshop that marries tried-and-true techniques with stress-reliving mindfulness techniques.

Discover a new skill, meet new friends, and have fun. Both workshops will take place at Eleven Mile Farm and supplies will be provided, and every participant will leave with a fabulous flower creation to take home. See you there!

“About 12 years ago — after moving away and eventually returning — my husband and I knew we were committed to staying in Pittsburgh. We wanted to find a parcel of land where we could expand our passion for gardening and growing vegetables and live in a more rural setting. It was also important for us to be stewards of the land — to protect it from overdevelopment and to treat it without the use of harsh chemicals and detrimental practices. Plus, we wanted our children to continue in the schools where they were settled.

It took some time and patience to find Eleven Mile Farm, but it’s been an incredible experience for our family — both challenging and totally rewarding. I never intended to become a flower farmer, but the farm led me to it. I had a passion for gardening, and I started taking courses on cut flower farming. After getting my Master Gardeners certification, I jumped into learning as much as I could about growing flowers on a larger scale. I believe in the Slow Flower Movement, which supports seasonal flowers that are grown locally using sustainable practices.

We now have approximately two acres dedicated to cut flower farming, and I sell my flowers through my Floral CSA program, weekly bouquets and arrangements, small parties and events, and working with floral designers. I also host workshops on the farm where I teach people about this type of growing and give them a chance to be creative with flowers.

Seeing and experiencing flowers has been shown to have positive mental health benefits.  People just feel good viewing, smelling, and working with them. Many people feel intimidated or shy when they start a floral arranging class, but they quickly let the fun take over and settle into the experience. It can be powerful!

I'm thrilled to welcome The Salon to the farm and Flowershop and to create in this space.  Whether it's putting together a beautiful fall wreath using foraged and dried materials from the farm or creating a floral arrangement while focusing on senses, I believe participants will have fun and stretch their skills in a new way.

The shared experience also is meaningful. I've witnessed groups of individuals connect in meaningful ways through this very simple activity. September on the farm is really beautiful, and I also hope the adventure of coming to a special place will be a rewarding journey for all.”
