New Online Training Available to Assist Growers Better Understand Risk Management Tools

This summer, the University of Maryland (UMD) is partnering with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and USDA to create a four-module online training course, Maryland Farming Success.

The online training course is separated into four modules designed around preparing farmers for success by providing information about available USDA programs and creating the ability for participants to have a successful business plan, including - mission and goals, enterprise budgeting, risk management, and legal risk management.

For more information on the Maryland Farming Success learning course, or to REGISTER, click here.

This material is funded in partnership by USDA, Risk Management Agency,

Industrial hemp: What farmers need to know

This summer, UMD Extension intern Grace Tisone worked with UMD Assistant Professor and Agronomy Specialist, Dr. Nicole Fiorellino, to develop educational resources on industrial hemp.

You can listen to Grace interview Nicole in a podcast here.

And see brief summaries of industrial hemp growing practices on our Facebook and Instagram pages:

Urban farm incubator in Prince George’s County accepting applications for 2023 growing season

The Urban Farm Incubator at Watkins Regional Park is a collaboration among ECO City Farms, the Prince George’s Soil Conservation District (PGSCD), Prince George’s Food Equity Council (FEC), The Capital Market 0f 20743 at Mary and Main, and the M-NCPPC Parks and Recreation Department.

By opening up county land to smaller scale farmers, they aim to provide support for beginning farmers to launch new farm-based businesses in Prince George’s County using regenerative, certified naturally-grown, and organically-grown agricultural best practices.  They offer this next step training ground to help farmers decide whether they have a viable business plan, and to better assess their land and infrastructure needs when they are ready to purchase farmland or rent a plot elsewhere in the future. The Urban Farm Incubator accommodates multiple farmers and provides increased support through common infrastructure, equipment, mentoring, and technical assistance to help launch their businesses successfully.

Applications are now open for farmers interested in launching or expanding a farm-based business in 2023.

Tomato symptoms key

I have been finding this online tomato symptoms key, by Cornell Extension, to be very helpful this summer when I respond to questions from tomato growers.
It sorts symptoms by where they show up on the plant, and has photos to help with diagnosis.
