STEAC Food Project
DCC continues to participate in the Short Term Emergency Aid Committee (STEAC) Food Project -- in a contactless way. You're invited to contribute a bag of non-perishable grocery items directly to the STEAC site on the property at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 642 Hawthorn Lane, Davis.
At a time when the cost of food is rising, Davis' vulnerable families turn to STEAC for food. Over 14,000 meals were provided in July! Suggested items:
Annie's Mac and Cheese SPAM (Asian clients) Dried beans, lentils Pasta Small bottles of oil Microwaveable Mac and Cheese Nut Free Granola Bars
Individual Protein Drinks
The food drive is Saturday, August 13, 10 a.m.-12 noon. The food closet is also open every Tuesday 11-1 p.ml and Friday 1:30 -3 p.m. Please be sure to mark your bag "DCC" so our efforts are credited to our neighborhood group.

Sunday at DCC
ONE Sunday Service at 10:30 a.m. and Live-Streamed at 10:30 a.m. on the DCC YouTube Channel
August 17 - September 4, DCC will offer one Sunday service at 10:30 a.m., followed by Zoom Café and refreshments on the C Street patio after the service.
Sunday's psalm reading presents an image of God who calls God’s people to enacting justice. Rev. Hyemin (Joanne) Na provides a reflection on how God’s "Kin-dom" of justice materializes--through the small, the trite. Psalm 82, Luke 13: 18-21
Please welcome Professor Hyemin (Joanne) Na currently Assistant Professor of Religion, Media and Culture at Drew Theological School and is a Louisville Institute Postdoctoral Fellow. She is one of the most thoughtful and insightful preachers I know. She has been an invaluable peer mentor throughout my ministry here at DCC. I am confident that you will find her message well worth your time and consideration. I am very pleased that she agreed to speak on Sunday.
She holds an AB in Visual and Environmental Studies summa cum laude from Harvard University, an MDiv from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Theta Alpha Kappa honors and will defend her PhD in Religion dissertation this Fall at Emory University.
Professor Na’s recent academic conferences show her interest in the interplay of technology, faith and culture with papers on “The Smartphone as Religious Relic: An Object Lesson in Surveillance, Bureaucracy, and the Gospel of Progress in Korean Protestant Christianity in Global Korea,” “Megachurch Branding in a Global Korea: A Church Brand Story and Its Images,” and “Digital Productions of the Sacred: A Korean Megachurch and Its Racialized Visual Culture.”

It isn't really about the refreshments; it's about the connections we make. New Name: Coffee Connect!
Zoom Café
Zip over to Zoom after the service and join in the discussion. In a small group, you will have an opportunity to share your thoughts and meet friends online.
Vaccination Required
We continue to require full vaccination, including one booster shot, or testing within 72 hours of events at DCC. A second booster shot is recommended for all who are eligible.
10:30 a.m. service: N95, KN95 or KN94 masks continue to be required. This precaution provides protection for vulnerable congregants and allows young, unvaccinated children to be in the Sanctuary.
On Campus – Masking Highly Recommended
DCC's Session continues to HIGHLY RECOMMEND, but not require, masking indoors as we return to our in-person activities. Having said that, groups are encouraged to discuss and agree to the precautions they will take so that everyone in the group feels safe. Groups may choose to require more, but not less, stringent precautions.
For all who attend Sunday School, we require proof of full vaccination, including booster shots for all who are eligible.
Discovery Time (DT) is a short in-person Bible story time offered in the Sanctuary during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, and is followed by Sunday School. Children attending DT will be asked to follow the same COVID precautions as those attending the service: i.e., full vaccination (as eligible) or testing within 72 hours of events at DCC, and high-quality masks. Everyone age 2 and over will be required to wear an N95, KN95 or KF94 mask while indoors. We have additional masks of this kind on hand.
For children who do not wish to go into the Sanctuary for DT, or who cannot be vaccinated or test, childcare will be provided outdoors and DT will be available for you to watch from home on the DCC YouTube channel. For all children attending Sunday School or other childcare sessions, please be sure to bring proof of vaccination for your children, or email a photo of their card tokate@dccpres.org.
All in the Family Our hearts go out to Sue Bennett and her entire family following the death of Ken Bennett, Sue’s son. We pray for his children Owen and Piper and his wife Kristine. A service will be held for Ken on Saturday, September 3 at 2 p.m. at DCC.....Larry Glasmire is recovering well from a successful heart valve surgery. Please continue to pray for both Kathy and Larry as he regains his strength.

Update: Interim Pastor Nominating Committee
The Interim Pastor Nominating Committee is a subcommittee of the Session, our governing board. So far, we have identified 3 candidates for the interim position. The sub-committee is reviewing the applicants and doing preliminary work. Once the review is complete, the entire Session will make the decision to extend an offer to a candidate who will provide pastoral leadership during our search for a head pastor. We are optimistic we will have an interim pastor in early fall and plan to provide updates as things progress.

What's the Deal With the Dead Birds? They're not real! You may have noticed what appears to be dead crows hanging from the trees on the
C Street patio. These decoy crows act as a deterrent to crows that make a mess on the patio. The decoys appear to be effective!
Coffee Connect Crew! Can you help out?
In August, Coffee Connect is after the 10:30 a.m. service. Deborah Joy prepares the coffee, decaf and hot water each week. We need one person 11:10-12:30 p.m. to set up, set out, and clean up after coffee hour. You are welcome to team up with a friend, but it really is a simple job.
Thanks to Jeanie Istas and Hannah Bartram for helping out this coming Sunday. And thank you all for your response to this effort to provide time to connect after worship.

Blessing of the Backpacks is an opportunity to start the school year off with a blessing for a great year to come. During worship, our children will be invited to bless the grownups in their lives (parents/guardians/educators), and the adults, in turn, will offer a blessing for the children. These moments of transition can be important for children’s formation as they learn what it means to mark meaningful occasions through a lens of faith. It is also a gift to be empowered to bless one another through simple words and gestures. We hope you join us for this special occasion!

The Community Men’s Talk Circle is a forum for men for all ages: 18 and older. We meet monthly, on the second Wednesday, from 7 – 9 p.m. on Zoom. The link is below.
It may help newcomers to know that the Talk Circle has been meeting for the past 11 years. It allows men of three generations to talk openly, free of advice, of that which holds meaning to them. We know that many men gain greater clarity to their issues, as they talk aloud and feel heard. The Talk Circle allows men to talk as they feel ready. The Talk Circle is confidential, free of charge and all men are welcome!

What is Sacred Space? Sacred Space is a contemplative worship space that will be offered once a month at9 a.m. in the sanctuary beginning sometime in the fall. The service seeks to enrich our worship experience and expand our outreach to meet the spiritual needs of those who consider themselves “spiritual but not religious.” We seek to create a more contemplative worship experience that focuses on integrating ancient and contemporary spiritual practices from diverse traditions that appeal to the senses, silence, meditation, and ritual embodiment.
How is Sacred Space different from our current service? Sacred Space is much more of an open, meditative space that invites the community to engage in spiritual practices as they feel led. This emphasis has similarities to more traditional expressions of corporate contemplation, e.g. Taize. preaching, hymns, and traditional order of worship will be offered at all the other services.
