Wonderful Welwyn Garden City Newsletter

Hope you are all keeping well in the heat! And we hope it will be warm but not too warm for Screen on the Green next week! Find all the listings below.

This week has been a busy one, we hosted a training session for WGCWatch users, thanks to those who attended. If you missed it, you can download the presentation below.

We had a visit from Sophie and the team at LoyalFree who visited a number of businesses. Remember, if you have an offer to put on now is a great time to do it ahead of Screen on the Green to get maximum exposure.

There is a further update regarding the works planned by Hertfordshire County Council, please read it carefully as it may affect your business, and feed back to HCC with any concerns.

Have a great weekend!

•    Dedicated space for cycling in Wigmores North and Fretherne Road
•    Improved pedestrian crossings points around Howardsgate
•    Introduction of a town centre 20mph speed limit

Delivery of the other improvements around Howardsgate, Fretherne Road and Wigmores North will follow in early 2023.

Early works
For two nights only, there will be a full road closure on Bridge Road (Hunters Bridge) to install temporary bus facilities to support Phase A when the bus station is closed. Works will take place on 30 and 31 August between 8pm and 5am.

Phases A - C road closures
For approximately 2 weeks during Phase A (5 – mid September), Osborn Way will be closed to traffic in both directions between the Bridge Road roundabout and the car park entrance to allow the works to progress.
During Phase B (mid – late September), Osborn Way westbound will reopen to traffic, but will remain closed eastbound.
Osborn Way eastbound will remain closed during Phase C (early – mid October), with the additional closure of Bridge Road westbound. The eastern section of the roundabout will also be closed between the Bridge Road and Osborn Way exits.

Service and residents’ access to Stonebank will be maintained throughout.

Access to Hunters Bridge Multi-Storey carpark will be maintained during all phases of the construction works.

The diversion routes:
Official diversions will be in place, clearly signed and publicised in advance.

  • When Bridge Road is closed during the early works a signed diversion route will be in place via A1000 Broadwater Road, A6129 Stanborough Road, B197 Great North Road, Valley Road, Bridge Road and The Campus.

  • For Phases A and B, a signed diversion will be in place via Bridge Road, A1000 Broadwater Road, A6129 across the railway line and Osborn Way.

  • The diversion route for phase A and B will continue to be in use during Phase C for the eastbound closure of Osborn Way. An additional diversion route will be in operation for the westbound closure of Bridge Road via Bessemer Road, A1000 Broadwater Road, A6129 across the railway line and Osborn Way.

Diversion maps are available online at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/activetravelfund

Bus services
There will be temporary disruption to bus services in Phase A, with the full closure of Osborn Way. During this period, buses will not serve the bus station. Buses will operate from bus stops on Bridge Road outside Waitrose (Stop H) and John Lewis (Stop J). Additional temporary bus stops will also be in use on Bridge Road.

From mid-September, bus services to and from the bus station will resume. Some services may experience longer journey times during the early works and subsequent phases due to road closures (detailed above).

Information will be published on the Intalink website: www.intalink.org.uk/service-updates. Details will also be displayed on physical notices at all relevant bus stops in the town centre and at the bus station.

Pedestrian and cycle access
Access will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists accessing the town centre throughout the works.

During Phase A, a temporary crossing will be installed across Osborn Way while the new toucan crossing is installed. The pedestrian route between Osborn Way and Bridge Road (Hunters Bridge) will be maintained, but a small section of footway will be closed on Osborn Way. A short-term diversion will be in place via Stonebank and will be clearly signed. The pedestrian crossing over Bridge Road (Hunters Bridge) opposite Waitrose will remain in use.

From mid-September, the new toucan crossing over Osborn Way will open.

From the start of the works, the existing cycle lanes on Hunters Bridge will be relocated slightly to facilitate temporary changes to bus stops. Temporary ramps will be added where required to allow continued access.

In Phase C, there will be a full westbound closure of Bridge Road which will close the cycle access on the carriageway. Cyclists will need to dismount onto the pavement.

Further phases
Updates on the subsequent phases of work will be available online at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/activetravelfund.

We appreciate your patience while we complete these works.
