Green Bowie News September 2022

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

It’s a fact: You can really make a difference.

Are you concerned about the loss of habitat for birds, pollinators, and other
wildlife? Want to make a difference by creating beneficial and beautiful habitat
on your own property? Want to be part of a wildlife-friendly community network?
Help is available!
Beginning again in September 2022, the Prince George’s Audubon Wildlife Habitat Program will
offer County residents the opportunity for a no-cost, on-site, in-person visit with trained advisors working to bring positive change to your property or neighborhood site. Visits go like this: volunteer Habitat Advisors typically spend an hour walking the property with you. They talk with you about native plants and landscape elements that provide food, water and shelter for birds, pollinators and other wildlife. Together you discuss topics like garden structure, lawn reduction, invasive plant removal, water conservation, and bird protection, setting priorities and making a plan for moving forward. When ready, you can certify online and order an attractive Audubon Bird-Friendly Habitat yard sign.

Recipe of the Month

Where we give you a plant-based recipe to help your health and the environment!

Peanut Butter Freezer Fudge

You will need:
  • 1 cup of peanut butter (sub with any nut butter if you prefer a different one)
  • 1/4 cup of coconut oil, melted
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup (sub with agave if you prefer)
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • Sea salt for topping

Directions:

  • 1. Prepare a 9- by 5-inch loaf pan by lining with parchment paper.
  • 2. In a medium bowl, mix together the peanut butter, coconut oil, maple syrup and vanilla until well combined.
  • 3. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan. Freeze for 45 minutes or until the fudge is firm. Top with flaky sea salt, if desired.
  • 4. Store fudge in the freezer, as it will melt if left out at room temp for too long. Keeps in airtight container, in freezer, for up to a week.
This recipe is courtesy of Samah Dada of the Today Show, and Sue Livera who submitted it.

  • Learn more about Maryland's energy supply, usage, policies, etc. by visiting this on-line manual about Maryland's Energy.

  • Explore different choices for electricity providers through this Maryland website that allows you to filter choices based on your needs i.e. 100% renewable, wind, etc.

Community Solar:

Having solar panels on your home is not the only option for obtaining residential solar! By subscribing to a Maryland based community solar farm a customer is allotted a specified percentage of the entire farm’s electricity output each month, which the customer agrees to purchase from the supplier at a price that is typically 5%-25% below the rate the utility charges. That percentage of the overall output is then converted into a dollar amount which is calculated at the current rate that the utility charges their residential customers.  That dollar amount is then reflected on the customer’s utility bill in the form of a credit. Here is a great resource to learn more about Community Solar in Maryland and more specifically by Electricity provider.

About Ampion Solar Farms (New projects nearby): Ampion is connecting Maryland residents to Community Solar projects located in D.C., Temple Hills, and Cheverly. These Community Solar Farms are located at WMATA station parking lots and will provide a shady spot for commuters to park their cars! Read about the solar farm in Anacostia here: ampion.net/anacostia-metro
