We have entered Hispanic Heritage Month. This is the time for us to celebrate our heritage and champion the contributions that Hispanics have accomplished in our community. We are a community rich in culture, history, customs and traditions and most importantly we are very tight knit, somos Familia. Somos SHPE.
SHPE Houston appreciates the hard work you give every day in your work and in the community. Sometimes without thinking about it, you are changing lives and becoming the inspiration of the next generation. They could be your siblings, a little cousin or the students that we meet in our outreach with schools or the community. Gracias.
I invite you to take a moment to see what SHPE Houston has to offer. This Hispanic Heritage month is filled with great opportunities for y’all to give, learn, inspire and network.

Join us as we take on the LA Galaxy at PNC Stadium for $28 per seat. First 5,000 fans get a Hector Herrera bobblehead! Members and Non-members are welcomed! Our group ticket reservation ends Friday, September 23rd, 2022. Make sure to get there early to join us for a pregame social at a nearby restaurant. You are welcome to join the pregame even if you didn't get tickets for the game.

With National Convention just around the corner, it is time to get ready for this popular and large event - Region 5 Southeast Texas Regional Retreat! SHPE Houston in collaboration with SHPE Rice is hosting this professional development and networking event at Rice University. It is open to ALL students & professionals in Region 5. Purpose is to make sure our familia is convention ready to land their dream internship or first job.

After completion of the regional retreat, let's have a friendly competition between SHPE UH and SHPE Houston professionals!. We invite you to this collaborative Kickball tournament to kick off the start to National Convention in November and build comradery between local and neighboring SHPE familia. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be awarded medals and the champion will be able to have bragging rights with the Kickball trophy!

SEPTEMBER MemberSHPE SPOTLIGHT
Let's all congratulate Milena Nino Sowell, September's SHPE Houston MemberSHPE Stoplight. Milena is Baytown Chem Plant Lead Financial Analyst for ExxonMobil and was honored with SHPE's STAR Award - Star of Tomorrow. The SHPE Technical Achievement and Recognition (STAR) Awards recognize those in STEM who are changing lives through their community outreach, work, and research.
Milena is of Columbian decent who grew up in Pennsylvania and John Hopkins University Alumni. Her SHPE experience stretches from her undergraduate years were she took the role of Community Outreach and as a professional in SHPE Houston chapter as Scholarship Coordinator where Milena facilitated the scholarship program for two years and organized the virtual gala which raised funds for scholarships.
In addition to her professional role, she forms part of GOAL, her Latino ERG at ExxonMobil and serves as community outreach chair. Externally, Milena is highly involved with HSF (Hispanic Scholarship Fund) as a mentor and an active member of the Houston Advisory Council. Muchas felicidades Milena and the SHPE Houston familia is honored to have you and proud of your accomplishments!
The STAR Award honorees will be recognized during the SHPE National Convention being held in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 2-6.
