Report from the Commodore

I was delighted to attend the HBYC presentation last Friday night and enjoy the company of fellow members as well as invited dignitaries from our kindred clubs. Congratulations to the winning skippers and crews and to all those who competed over the past season. A big shout out to our sailing administrator Stephen Cheney, our club manager Rod Austin, Erica Cookson from the office and all those involved for making it a special evening. Of course, to our volunteer start boat and race officers who run the races, we thank them for their efforts to let us enjoy our shared passion of sailing and racing. And last but not least, the Sailing Committee led by Jonathan Fryer (pictured with me above) for their wonderful contribution to a successful season. There are more photos of presentation night featured below

We have a busy few weeks coming up at the club with a run of events, including the last Brass Monkeys race on August 27. Dave Phillips will be headlining the catering with his fabulous fish n chips on the menu and I ask all members to invite their crew and friends up to the club after racing. Series winners will be announced and there will be live entertainment and drink specials.
This coming Friday the club is hosting the RULE Prostate Cancer Awareness Lunch with a great line-up of guests. Our own Honorary Treasurer David Judge will be MC, ensuring the lunch will be both entertaining as well as educational. Tickets are still available or, alternatively, if you would like to show your support but can’t make it to the lunch, there are raffle tickets available with great prizes on offer, but importantly proceeds go to a most worthy cause.

The club’s Annual General Meeting is on September 16. I encourage any eligible and keen members that are willing to volunteer their time, skills and knowledge to look after fellow members’ interests and the club grounds and assets to nominate and help shape the future of our great club. All relevant notices and forms will be sent out shortly and if you need any more details on what’s involved, please don’t hesitate to contact myself, any sitting GC member, or our club manager Rod.

As I’ve mentioned in previous newsletters, I’m committed to communicating to members any news on the lease negotiations or any other major club updates. The Strategic Planning working group is preparing to give their update soon and, as always, the sub-committees, working groups, General Committee members and staff are continually working hard behind the scenes. I thank them for their time and commitment and brilliant work.

Good luck to the Ikon and Merlion skippers and crews representing HBYC at the upcoming Hamilton Island Race Week, as well as our members on board Happy Hours competing at Magnetic Island Race Week later in the month. I assure you I’m not one bit jealous. To all those in contention for the Brass Monkeys series, I wish you good luck and hope to see you all out on the water or around the club soon.
Cheers,
Paul Neilson

2022 Club member of the Year, Peter Clark

CONGRATULATIONS.
Peter deserves some serious recognition for his efforts on behalf of the cruising group, actually the club doesn’t have a cruising group, what it does have is a monthly very sociable meal and a talk. Without Peter this just wouldn’t happen. Somehow he manages to not just think of someone but to track down their contact details, persuade them to talk, usually free, or for a very nominal charge, to a small yacht club audience .
It's pretty stressful when you have a fixed date, the first Friday in every month, and you have to produce a speaker out of thin air. There is no list to choose from. No speaker,...........no cruising group.
While a lot of them are club members back from an interesting sailing adventure or locals with a particular sailing expertise, there have been a substantial number of outside presenters. Long distance sailors such as Lisa Blair, Jessica Watson and Jesse Martin (Peter is pictured above with Jesse Martin OAM).  There have been racers (in the cruising group !!!) such as foiler Rohan Veal, Olympic Gold medalist Mark Turnbull, George Shaw ORCV veteran. Sheree Marris gave us a fascinating talk on the undersea life in Port Phillip while Simon Murray told us what his group was doing to reduce pollution on the surface. We had a talk on local lighthouses on the south coast and then a fascinating description of the events surrounding the plague ship Ticonderoga held at the Portsea quarantine station in 1852 from author Michael Veitch. Jerry Grayson gave us his account of being a helicopter pilot involved in rescuing survivors during the 1979 Fastnet race. And who could forget Sandy Mackinnon (twice). 120 members came to his hilarious talk about his mirror dinghy voyage from central England to Romania described in his book “Jack De Crow”.
Everything the cruising group has done has been completely self funding while producing some very decent bar money for the club. Peter does all the catering and procurement, meaning an extensive shopping trip the day of the talk to provide fresh food for a menu which is different every month. He has assembled a small bunch of volunteers who cook up a storm under Snowy’s watchful eye.
He also keeps in contact with club members actively cruising and shares their position and news with members on the night.
It’s a great effort and deserves recognition.
Peter's partner Le Yen received this same award a few years ago, however this was for the glitz and glamour of the presentations whereas Peter has done the hard yards of the logistics as described above.

Sailing

Hello everyone

With one more race to go to finalise both our overall season and the Brass Monkey Series, it has been a great year of sailing, albeit a little abridged with a slow start.  To that end, the Sailing Committee has now posted next year's Sailing schedule under Calendar on the website. We have provided an overview of the season with all of the various race series noted, together with a pdf of the sailing season and an excel version if you prefer to edit  the season for your particular boat.  The Google calendar has also been updated with the ability to download events directly to your digital diary.  Access all of the above HERE

Fair sailing to the Merlion crew as they move further north to Hamilton Island via multiple other islands (Middle Percy and Scawfell) fending off mother whales and her calves as they go.  I am sure we will hear more about these encounters at the bar in future months...

A HUGE thank you to all the Race Officers involved, without you, we could not do what we all love to do...

RYCV Wednesday Afternoon B&G Laura Gloria

Not too many takers this week...
Roy, can you sort out some heating for the concrete pier please?

What has happened to Privateer?

As most of you are aware, Privateer, our committee/start boat has been out of action for the last couple of Brass Monkey races.  We have been borrowing a boat very generously loaned to us, (including a driver) from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria.

Following some reliability issues Privateer is undergoing a major overhaul of her engine and stern drive which did involve removing the engine from the boat.  This has enabled us to clean up some redundant equipment, review electrical wiring and remove superfluous sea cocks etc.

Further work has included upgrading the boat's electrical system, bilge pump (replacement of both electrical and manual), head and associated plumbing together with refastening of hatches and general wear and tear items that any Club Committee boat suffers.

Following this work we believe we have many more seasons of use.

A new regular maintenance regime with regular checks for oil and water etc will further increase reliability. To link with this, we are commencing the training a group of drivers for all club boats including Privateer, Shirley Freeman and our new coaching rib.

Pre Season Boat Declaration.

As we move toward to the start of the new sailing season, please ensure you have completed all of the required declarations on our Man Overboard, Safety Audits, and Insurance to enable you to be eligible to enter club events.

Access to a short cut for that information can be found via the following link - https://hbyc.org.au/pre-season-declaration

Safety Category

As required under our Pre Season Boat Declaration (see above), please ensure your have bought you boat up to the required Safety Category for the events that you would like to enter.

Most of our races are held 'on the flats' and require Safety Category 6, but if you intend to enter either the Two-Handed Series or the John Neilson Long Distance Series, please note that these races require that the boat complies to Category 5.

If you intend to sail events such as the Port Phillip Sea Pilots Race or intend to sail home directly after a Long Distance Race in the dark you will require a 5N rating.

Please refer to our website via the following link https://hbyc.org.au/as-safety-audit-forms

Weighing Day.

A weighing day will be held on Sunday 18th September 2022 from 9am at Sandringham Yacht Club for boats that wish to obtain or update their measurement rating certificates – AMS, ORCc endorsed and IRC.

The cost of the weighing will be $275 per boat.

All boats are weighed in an “empty” configuration and this means that the IRC and ORC weight is provided. The AMS weight is the empty weight plus the weight of the AMS permitted gear, which is weighed in a basket on the club crane.

Please email at info@raceyachts.org if there are any queries or if you wish to make a booking
.

Drivers Wanted.

We are seeking members who are interested in joining our 'Race Management' team, who have the appropriate power boat handling qualifications and relevant experience and would be willing to spend time on the Bay with our qualified Race Officers during our scheduled race events.

If you don't have the qualifications, but are interested, please let me know as we would be interested in providing some training.

If you are interested, please register your interest via email to racing@hbyc.org.au

Ocean Sailing Events.

In the lead-up to the 50th Melbourne to Hobart, the opportunities for ocean sailing are defined here https://www.orcv.org.au/calendar/orcv-races

As with all races, you can compete fully crewed, 4+ autohelm or double-handed.

For those considering some ocean sailing, these short courses, category 3 start in daylight are a great way to test your crew and boat.  You can enjoy a different style of racing which can have you home that night.  A great option for those considering a longer passage to Devonport or Hobart.  Entries are open here https://www.orcv.org.au/about-the-series

October 28th – Devonport, the Rudder Cup.

Now on the Melbourne Cup long weekend, you can now be part of the Rudder Cup race to Devonport, the oldest ocean race in Australia, a qualifier race for Hobart.  Entries open here https://www.orcv.org.au/deveonport-about-the-cup

Safety & Sea Survival Courses, Sept 11th and November 20th

Heading to Devonport or Hobart?  The ORCV requires that 50% of the crew (including the skipper or sailing master) must carry a SSS certification and 100% where a boat is racing double-handed.  Please check your crew as the ORCV SSS has a self-paced online content to be completed before your 1 days in person session.  Bookings can be made here https://www.orcv.org.au/training/safety-sea-survival-course-sssc
