Fungal infections: your questions answered

Our experts in the Mycology Reference Centre Manchester have compiled responses to the most common questions GPs ask about fungal infections.

Among the topics discussed is what to do if standard treatment is not working for vulvovaginal candidiasis, oral/oropharyngeal candidiasis, or tinea - a generic name for superficial skin, nail and hair infection caused mainly by dermatophytes.

In addition, there is a look at what is new about Candida and dermatophyte infections.

Role of vitamin D in maintaining bone health is questioned

Few Biochemistry tests have seen as big a transformation in requesting frequency in the last two decades as Vitamin D.

After our article on the need for rational requesting in the last edition, an eagerly awaited research study report has been published which does not provide the support for vitamin D supplements in preventing or treating diseases which many had expected.

Call for Medical Examiner's service pilot sites

All GP practices will now have received a letter from the National Medical Examiner, National Medical Director and NHS National Director of Patient Safety detailing the next phase of the Medical Examiner’s service, which will begin its statutory phase in April.

The Medical Examiner team at MFT is now inviting GP surgeries as individuals or groups to nominate themselves to become one of our pilot sites.

Chart: nine reasons why samples were rejected

Wrong specimen for requested investigation. No date on specimen. Wrong tube for our analyser. These are just some of the reasons why samples sent to our laboratories have to be rejected.

We have produced a breakdown of the reasons why samples sent to our Haematology laboratory for a full blood count could not be processed in this graphic.

Following the requirements detailed in our Specimen Acceptance Policy and for each test as listed on our website would have avoided many of these rejections
