Outlander by Diana Gabaldon was an action-packed part of Dan's and my television watching during the past three years. The book is better written than the series. Here are the first two sentences: "It wasn't a very likely place for the disappearances, at least at first glance. Mrs. Baird's was like a thousand other Highland bed and breakfast establishments in 1945: clean and quiet, with fading floral wallpaper, gleaming floors, and a coin-operated hot-water geyser in the lavatory."

I'm a long-time fan of Lousie Erdrich's engaging stories of the Indigenous peoples of the United States wince reading Yellow Raft in Blue Water. In The Night Watchman, Louise Erditch brings us to the Cheppewa council members in North Dakaota. I've just started the book, so more soon! The Night Watchman's first two sentences at Turtle Mountain Jewel Bearing Plant: Thomas Wazhashz removed his thermos from his armpit and set it on the steel desk alongside his scruffed briefcase. His work jacket went on the chair, his lunch box on the cold windowsill.

Frank McCourt is another favorite author of 'Tis, Angela's Ashes, and Teacher Man. This summer I read Teacher Man for the second time after my daughter, a teacher, moved to Brooklyn. I was inspired the first read, so enjoyed this storyteller's life between administration and students in a place he was challenged every moment for decades. We are told some prize moments. In the Prologue: "If I knew anything about Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis I'd be able to trace all my troubles to my miserable childhood in Ireland"
