Landowners needed for Invasive Species Survey

Purdue University is assessing cost-share programs’ efficacy in mitigating invasive plants in forests in Indiana, sponsored by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. To this end, you are invited to fill out a Qualtrics survey, regardless of whether or not invasive plants have been removed from your properties between 2000 and 2020. Your responses will be kept in strict confidence and will not be linked to you.

As federal spending on invasive management has increased nearly five-fold since the beginning of the new millennium, more and more landowners have turned to voluntary conservation programs for financial assistance to defray some of their control expenses. Alarmingly, to date, little information is available as to whether participation in conservation cost-sharing has actually helped contain or reduce invasion on enrolled forestlands. This study by Purdue University will help to guide future policy implementation, optimize the additional impact per dollar of public funds, and safeguard the sustainability of timber resources and ecosystem services.

To complete the survey, please click HERE or copy and paste the following link into the address bar in your Internet browser: https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6Y8oeLpDW6uh95Q

Alternatively, you can scan the QR code below to participate:

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this survey, please contact the principal investigator of the project, Dr. Mo Zhou at Purdue University by phone: (765) 494-3098 or email: mozhou@purdue.edu. Thank you for what you do to help control invasive plants in Indiana’s forests.

Spotted Lanternfly found in Huntington County

In July spotted lanternfly (SLF) was found in Huntington in about a 30-acre area west of downtown. It is unknown how the infestation started but looks to be old, and possible it showed up via rail or on vehicular traffic. SLF can be easily moved from one location to another on cars, trucks, and various outdoor articles so it is important to check items before you move them. It was also found last July in Switzerland County.

Be on the lookout for this invasive pest! If you suspect you may have seen spotted lanternfly in your area please contact Indiana DNR at DEPP@dnr.IN.gov or 866-NO-EXOTIC (866-663-9684). Leave your name, contact information and the county in which you live.
