This month we hear from...
Alex Segura

Alex is a multimedia journalist based in LA who previously reported in Barcelona, London, Austin and Washington DC. He specializes in economy, national politics and migration.

After 5 years with Agencia EFE, Alex is now working at Voice of America and he is the LA Chair of the Association of Foreign Correspondents in the US.
Why journalism?
A lot of my childhood memories are related to journalism. My dad always encouraged me to read different articles in local and national newspapers, to listen carefully to the radio and watch the news on TV. I always thought “wouldn’t it be so cool to be one of them once I grow up?” So I did and here we are.

What was the most satisfactory story you’ve been working on?
Covering migration stories at the US-Mexico border has always been very challenging and interesting to me. The first city I was based on in the United States was Austin (Texas) and one of the most important beats at that time was the border. The most satisfactory one came some years later, when I travelled from San Diego (California) to El Paso (Texas) stopping at several border cities and towns to discover the economic impact of the pandemic. It was a tough topic but a fantastic experience.

A country you’d love to report from
For some reason, it will always be Italy. Even though it’s pretty similar to Spain, I’ve always found Italian culture and politics fascinating. I think it would be challenging because Italian people have their own way, but I would love to. Rome is one of my favorites cities in the world and the gastronomy would for sure help!

What has been the most helpful advice you’ve received by a mentor of yours?
To not care about what other journalists might say/think about you. Unfortunately, after some years in the field I’ve realized that there’s a lot of ego in our profession and I’ve had to deal with some difficult situations. That would be the best advice I’ve been given.

Dream interview would be with…?
Nelson Mandela. His story will always be a great example to people who stay strong to overcome adversities and bad conditions.
