Farewell to a devoted public servant

August 29, 2022

Dear Stewards,

Our friend Mike Lair led an impressive career with California State Parks for the last 29 years. Mike has served a number of roles in our park district from Manager to Superintendent and many more. For the last nine years Mike has served a unique role as Stewards' "Cooperating Association Liaison" meaning he has supported our organizational growth and development by participating in board meetings, finances, and planning.

He has offered tremendous guidance, leadership, and oversight and helped Stewards build a strong connection with our premiere agency partner. His dedication to public service has been unwavering and we are very grateful for his tenure as friend and ambassador to our organization. As he retires at the end of the month, we wish him happiness and success with his family and future endeavors. Thank you for all your support, Mike!

We look forward to introducing you to our incoming Cooperating Association Liaison. In the meantime, I invite you to join me on the Sonoma Coast for an Ocean Dance with the Sonoma County Pomo Dancers on Saturday, September 17th at 2PM. They last joined us for a Spring Dance at Armstrong Redwoods in the Redwood Forest Theater, and this time will be on the coast to offer blessings while sharing tribal tradition and culture through dance. There's a special surprise in store for the event... Please register to learn more!

Sincerely yours,

Justin Lindenberg

Dedication Table in memory of Bill Bambrook
"Leave the road, take the trail."
(Other side: "In loving memory of Bill Bambrick
Husband Father Pop Pops Steward")

We recently gathered above Furlong Gulch along the Sonoma Coast for a dedication (and associated picnic table placement) honoring one of our great and spirited leaders, Bill Bambrick. Volunteers, family members, and staff shared stories of the lasting imprint Bill left on their lives and the legacy he leaves behind. Bill was an effective and ideal leader that brought people together in the spirit of service for the common good. His legacy lives on in the positive influence he had on others and we are honored that his family and friends will have a special place to remember him.

Seal Watch Report
8.14.2022 - Seals relaxing on the beach where the mouth of the
Russian River meets the Pacific ocean.

Hi Folks,

I attended the afternoon shift on this gorgeous, stunning day along the Sonoma coast. I counted only 44 or so seals and lots of sea birds.

Interesting people came by to admire and witness the seals. It’s always so refreshing and hopeful to talk to such diverse folks, to hear their reverence and awe for these creatures, especially our younger friends of wildlife. The weather couldn’t have been better, sunny, a light breeze and temps in the 70s. Perfect!  I’ll be there the next three Sundays, too. Thanks! --Heather
Join us! Become part of our Seal Watch team! Enjoy your day at the beach, talking with the public and educating them about seal life.  And don't forget to bring your camera and capture heartwarming images of baby seals and their moms!  For more information, email stewards@stewardscr.org.
Seabird Monitoring
Seabird Monitors on Bodega Head (left to right)  Bonnie Wilson, Anna Gil,
Chris Dreyer and Bob Allan
It was one of those magical afternoons at the Head with warm sun shining and very little breeze.  Visibility was very good, quite a relief from weeks of fog coming and going, so we were able to do some good counting.  Anna and I were joined by Tish, her husband Brendan, and Terri who came to check out how a Seabirds shift works.  They were both enthusiastic about the program and were helpful in recording our many fly-bys and birds in the surrounding waters.  Let's hope to see Tish and Terri again out at our rocks next season.

Things have changed a lot in the bird populations this week.  A lot of the Common Murre had left but there were Brandt's Cormorant everywhere, outnumbering the Common Murre by 2 to 1.  The Brandt's Cormorant chicks were flapping the appendages they found attached to their bodies and straying from the comfort of their nests getting ready to explore the world and fly to places unknown. - Carol Farnes

Join us and become a Seabird Monitor!
Meet new friends, and hang out on the coast! Free training!

Hi Folks!  We had a good volunteer turn out today, so we split into two teams.  The one I was on went up the Pomo Canyon Trail, and we managed to clear ALL the rest of the sections that still need attention.  It’s not often that we can declare the Pool Ridge/Red Hill trails “DONE!"  Cheers! Mark
