August 17, 2022

By the grace of God, we at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church are filled with the Holy Spirit and respond to God's love by sharing the Good News with our friends and neighbors. We go into our community and world to make a difference in the name of Jesus.

Constant God

I've moved many times throughout my life. Before I was even out of junior high school I had moved 10 times and had gone to 7 different schools. And there have been many more moves after that, during which I migrated from southern California, to northern California to Washington, where I am finally putting roots down in Bellingham and embedding myself in the community. And while moving so many times has had its challenges – staying in contact with old friends, making new friends, address changes and lost mail among other things – there have also been positive lessons gifted to me. The obvious, of course, is to embrace change rather than fight it. But a more important lesson that was recently revealed as I moved to yet another location in Bellingham (my 4th!), is to remember that which remains constant: my faith in God.

In our reading from Isaiah this week, verse 11 states that "the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong." When I read that line while creating the bulletin, I felt an immense wave of gratitude. When I've lost loved ones, had children, got divorced, and changed jobs or homes, God was always there. The Lord does indeed find me in those parched places, the places of unrest, and liminal spaces throughout change, giving me the strength I need to continue. I also find it comforting that the bible is sprinkled with so many uplifting scriptures about change.

The seasons change, the world spins, and life simultaneously moves in many different directions. And while that's happening, may you also find God in the midst of it all, constant, guiding you continually, fulfilling your needs.

Blessings,
Rebecca
