Welcome to the August newsletter!

In this edition we are excited to present our brand new section, Young Voices in Heritage in collaboration with the youth-led organisation ESACH. Every two months, a new article written by a young person will reflect the thoughts or experiences of the young generation within the vast landscape of cultural heritage.

Also in this edition, our feature article provides an overview of the evolution of monastic buildings in Portugal following the dissolution of religious orders in the 19th century.

In the FRH and members news, we give the floor to Raúl, a 16-year-old boy who recently walked the Camino de Santiago and wrote a pilgrim´s diary for us. If his story leaves you wanting more adventures, here are some more suggestions for you: go Touring between Towers in Belgium, experience "Tsjemping" in The Netherlands or explore the Abbeys of Normandy with the whole family.

For those keen on participating in international initiatives, be sure to check the Young European Heritage Makers competition, and keep an eye on the activities of the European Heritage Days in your country.

To finish, get a (virtual) taste of France's monastic liquors in our Religiana guide.

Happy reading and see you next month!

ADAPTIVE REUSE OF RELIGIOUS HERITAGE IN PORTUGAL: THE CASE OF MONASTIC BUILDINGS
The abolition of the religious orders during the 19th and 20th centuries in Portugal led to the closure of many monasteries throughout the country. Some abandoned buildings were destroyed to make room for new infrastructure while others were repurposed. Many of the latter were recognised as cultural heritage in the following decades. In this month's feature article, Catarina Almeida presents a series of historic monasteries that have survived to the present day, analysing the various formulas that have made this possible.  READ MORE >>

The initiative was born in the UK, from the Churches Conservation Trust (FRH member), but has rapidly spread to other countries such as The Netherlands. We tell you all the details about this experience and how to live it! READ MORE >>
