DOUBLE PREMIERSHIP WINNERS!!!

What a big day it was on Sunday over at Elsternwick Park! Both of our Senior Women's sides made history for the club, having not only won one premiership, but two!!

Our supporters didn't go unnoticed at the goal end throughout the day! Our Reserves won in a nail biter against Richmond Central with a final score of 3.5.23 to 2.7.19. With a few close calls we were undoubtedly delighted to see the first win for the day. Our Seniors came then came on and won convincingly against Parkdale Vultures to become Premiers and Champions on the back of a flawless season.
Seniors final Match Report
Well, it was back to the home of VAFA football, Elsternwick Park, to take on Parkdale for the fourth time this season. With our hearts full of joy and excitement following the Reserves heart stopping win we bounded out of the gates early as Brit snapped a goal in the first two minutes. From then on, in the first half, we played tentative, reactionary football and let Parkdale dictate the play. The moved the ball with quick hands and strong marking and kept our defence under enormous pressure. We found it difficult to make those connections and hit targets in space. But despite all that effort Parkdale were only able to come up with one goal and we went into half time all square.
The break gave us a chance to reset, gain some composure and settle down into our style of football. With Binni moving into the ruck we were able to replicate the first quarter with Brit's right foot banana snap bouncing kindly to open the scoring in the first minute. That seemed to give us a spark and it wasn't long after that Maddi W swooped on a loose ball in the goal square for her first of the day and when Meg's swirling snap from the pocket went through, the crowd behind the goals went beserk.
Liv, Meg and Bron worked tirelessly in the middle to shut down the Parkdale run and began to give us opportunities to go forward. Our defence remained rock solid as Maddy P, Tay, Chels and the tackle machine Angie gave Parkdale nothing.
Into the last quarter, while Parkdale still had some fight, the intensity began to drop and we were able to keep the ball in our forward half for the majority of the quarter. A quick snap from a marking contest in the goal square gave Vic her first and that was followed by Maddi W getting on the end of a great pass from Tia to put the game well out of Parkdale's grasp.
When the siren went the players and supporters broke out in celebrations all over the ground. This put a giant full stop to one of the most extraordinary and wonderfully rewarding seasons I've ever been involved in.

Match Report Reserves - Grand Final

We went to VAFA headquarters to take on Richmond Central in our last contest of the season. We anticipated a very tight contest too as Richmond has become our biggest rival with games decided by close margins over the past 2 years. So pre game we focused on us and reminded the players of what they can do when up for a challenge. 1st quarter, we won the first centre clearance and went forward and as it turned out it was going to be which defence would hold up the longest. It was very scrappy footy as both sides seemed to have trouble handling the ball cleanly and it seemed to take for ever before someone scored. At the end of the quarter we held the ascendancy by not allowing a goal and getting 1 ourselves. 6 points up at the break and asking the group for more. 2nd quarter was Richmond's best adding 2 goals to 1 though the footy seemed to live between both half back lines. This was a real contest with both sides giving everything which produced a very physical quarter. At half time we were 2 points down but the players were very upbeat and felt that that was Richmond's best. 3rd quarter was a real grind with both defences repelling attacks and the pressure went up. No goals were scored though Richmond added 3 behinds to 1 to take a 4 point advantage into the last quarter. The thought was we have been finishing games off very well this season, particularly the last half of the season. This we did having 4 shots to 1 though inaccuracy may have kept them in it till the last 3 minutes. That's when we broke there hearts by getting the goal that put us in front by 4 points. We fought so well till a very late scare as they won a free on the siren but was a bit far out and the pressure too great to register any score. Pandemonium on the bench as there was an explosion of emotion. We did it. Premiers 2022.
Score: Rich: 2.7- 19
SBMT: 3.5- 23
Best: Laura, Grace, Hedge, Ina, Jardi, Pebbles
Goals: Tamsin, Laura and Larissa 1ea.
